Place: If only Broadway Comments: Why thank you, Karen. Few things would give me more pleasure than reviving "Old King Cole" for my SOC classmates. Thus giving you poor unlucky soles who did not go to wonderful Lisbon a chance to see the well rounded education you missed out on. I do foresee a couple of problems with scheduling a presentation at our reunion. Even if I could find (although I'm SURE Mother kept it)my hand-made costume, it being made for a slight child, it could not be adjusted to my current size. Oh, it was a wonderful ensemble,(purple being a royal color) dark purple tights, a lighter shade of purple bloomers, a white shirt with full sleeves, a flowing calf length dark purple cape with light purple lining, a high backed collar, completely trimmed with faux white fur (cotton) and a glorious fitted crown covered with gold foil. Alas, performing out of costume, I'm afraid, it might be hard for some (triple drinking Coasty Don) to give proper respect to the role. I can already hear the heckling from the crude group. You know, the McGee following. Second, having some experience dealing with the reunion committee, I doubt, even with my pull, they would find the necessary time or place for such a staging. But I do deeply thank you for your thoughts and words!
Place: LV, TX Comments: Better make that a double ... maybe triple.
Place: Sachse Comments: Thanks Toni and SNL. Jack, I never knew what a thespian you were/are. Please treat your classmates to a soliloquy of your previous role in Queen of Hearts at the upcoming reunion. You'll have a captured audience, but please allow us to have at least one drink prior to your performance.
Place: Richardson Comments: Jack sweetheart - you always have had a different perspect on things.
Place: Garland USA Comments: Karen MD, how proud you must be! Trey stole the show that's for sure! What confidence he has at such an early age. Very cute.
Place: Lisbonville Comments: Well, SNL, it is obvious that your memory is failing. Or maybe you missed the outstanding rendition of "The Queen of Hearts" performed at dear old Lisbon Elementary. Even with the heavy handed direction of Ms. Roe we managed to bring excitement and life to the old standard. Total memorization of lines and stage direction was required and strictly enforced. The slightest pause (dramatic effect) or the utterance of uh was pounced on, loud and harsh correction given even to the point of your role being reduced to a "lesser" part. But then, on performance caution was throw to the wind, actors gave interpretation to their characters, stale writing gave way to brilliant ad-libbing (not forgotten lines being substituted for, as some alleged) completely different dance steps were introduced resulting in a highly reviewed and successful play. My own humble depiction of Old King Cole was reviewed as "different". My own Mother said she hardly recognized the part as the script she rehearsed repeatedly with me was full of "modern speak" and (there is the word again) "different" While Ms. Roe was obviously so taken with my interpretation that she couldn't find words to speak to me, I did receive the famous "look" with the raised eyebrow. I remember one of the parents saying "The Queen of Hearts" would never be the same. High praise indeed!!!
Place: Richardson Comments: Well I'm impressed!! Wow, elementary sch plays have certainly improved since my Lisbon days! Trey did a good job!!
Place: Sachse Comments: My 11-year-old grandson Trey performed and sang Tuesday night in his elementary school play. It was based on the old ABC Saturday morning educational programs which included "Conjunction Junction" etc. Look out Justin Bieber (lol).
Place: 66erville Comments: Yes, Ms Denning was there through 65. So was Ms. Tinnin, who I believe was SOC 59. So Butch and Delores didn't get married until 69. They were pretty "good friends" in 66. As I recall rumors were in the air. I think we had several teachers who were not a lot older than we were.
Place: Richardson Comments: As usual JS . . . you are a wealth of info!!
Place: The Woodlands, TX Comments: When I left SOC High, I never wanted to see the place ever again. That seemed like the longest 3 years. I guess I am surprised that former students would even entertain the notion of returning to the school as a place of employment. Below is a photo from 1956. At the time Butch Arnold was the "Band Commander". He is escorting the Band Sweetheart, Miss Leta Denning, to the Military Ball. I found it ironic that both of them came back to SOC as faculty members during my time there. What were they thinkin'? I don't know if Miss Denning taught during YOUR years, but BOY, was she a looker in 1963 (this old pic doesn't do her justice). I spent a whole semester drooling in her class. In fact, I feel a little dribble forming, even as I post this. Somebody hand me a handkerchief ... ![]()
Place: The Woodlands, TX Comments: SOC High opened in late 1952 and its very first band director was William E. Beckhart III. In 1953 Olen "Butch" Arnold was an 8th grader at SOC (which at the time housed 8th & 9th grades). Mr. Beckhart held that position until around 1961. If I recall the story correctly, his National Guard unit was called to active duty, thus opening the door for Butch Arnold to return to SOC and take the band reins. Mr. Beckhart had a son (Bill Beckhart IV) in MY class. In 1962 Bill was the Drum Major (nepotism ... maybe?). Bill had a sister (Sharon Beckhart) who was 3 years younger, but I don't recall if she graduated from SOC or went elsewhere? On March 30, 2008 the class was shocked to learn that Bill took his own life in Dallas. SNL mentioned she knew Butch Arnold's first two wives. In April 1965 Butch married #2 - Karen Dollar. She was part of the Class of '63 and was the "band secretary" that year. I think Butch was 7 yrs. her senior. They had one child, but divorced in 1969. In 1972 he married his current spouse and that marriage looks to be well intact.
Place: Garland USA Comments: SNL, thank you, thank you, thank you! I thought I was having another senior moment regarding her name!! I knew they were married but then I thought maybe I was wrong and they were brother and sister (the hair thing)! I heard the comment about the drill team too! Where's Ronney when we need him? He should contact the television station to have them correct themselves.
Place: The Big R Comments: Actually, Butch didn't say that... the reporter did. She also kept calling Delores "Delores Arnold Schmeltekopf" rather than Delores Schmeltekopf Arnold. Reporters say what sounds good but many don't ck their facts. The paper is full of misinformation where reporters take facts & reinterpt them, therefore printing totally wrong info. Don & I see it every day in the Sports pg. It's usually from a young reporter who desn't know the sport & didn't understand the info given to them in the first place!
Place: 66erville Comments: Butch kinda had a reverse career, didn't he? Started out as the band director at SMU and ended up teaching elementary school music. I think Ms Thomas MIGHT take exception with him saying he was in charge of the band AND drill team at SOC. Memory is a funny thing, as many of us are finding out. Looking back now, it is weird just how many young teachers we had at SOC. Wonder if it was the same at other high schools or another something special at SOC. |
