Place: Richardson Comments: If 996 was for the whole sch . . . then yes, we had more than that during our hayday! Our '66 graduating class had 516 who walked across the stage! So I'm sure there were many more than 250 in each of the Jr & Soph class at the time, making the sch enrollment well over 1,000 at the time. SOC '65 had the largest graduating class in SOC history. I can't remember the exact number, but when I went to their 40th reunion they had said how many walked across the stage. I was shocked, as it was a lot more than 516. It was right at 900 or more, but don't hold me to an exact number. Of course, after '65 & beginning with our class, the "leaving of O. C." began & the classes got less each yr.
Place: 66erville Comments: Story on the news/sports last night said that Plano East had 996 students. You think we had that many at SOC? That seems like a lot of students at one school.
Place: The Woodlands, TX Comments: Jack, your comments remind me that each week in ROTC we had a competition for "Best Dressed Cadet" and it largely came down to having a crispy starched uniform, shiney brass, and VERY shiney shoes. Week after week it came down to me vs. a classmate named Daniel Boone (yes, that was his given name). His shoes were always top notch with a mirror-like shine. Mine would be very shiney but the walk to school took some of the gleam off them. Then one day Daniel's secret came out. He had TWO pairs of ROTC shoes. One for everyday wear and a special pair ONLY for the Best Dressed contest and certain inspections. They looked better than brandnew! By the end of the next week I, too, had a 2nd set of shoes and began winning some of those competitons. I knew Daniel from my days at Zumwalt. He was VERY bright. At the end of our math classes he would annoy the rest of us by approaching the teacher and asking for the future assignments on material we hadn't even covered yet. He taught himself. At SOC he was equally brilliant. Surprisingly, after high school he was never heard from again. Never attended a reunion ... don't know what became of him. We've tried to locate him but its surprising how many families named "Boone" chose to name their son "Daniel".
Place: 66erville Comments: Major Southworth, I had a great time as Company Commander and ended my "career" as the commander of the instructional division. Which is weird, as later, part of my Army "career" I was an instructor at the Signal School in Fort Gordon. My brother by a different Mother, Jerry Tillery, was the Battalion Commander. In our years in ROTC he was most often the A number 1 cadet. He had a very successful, secret way of spit-shining his shoes. Probably studying and knowing the correct answers to all those military questions helped him too. From your description, you are keeping your certificate close to your brain! Gee, how big is The Woodlands school?
Place: The Woodlands, TX Comments: Well, Jack, at least I can take consolation in knowing that I'm an "Honorary" member of the famous Class of '66. And I still have the official certificate to prove it - I keep it right next to my heart ... oh, wait ... here it is in my BACK pocket. You, of all people, should be glad that I WASN'T part of your class. I was so into "ROTC" that for sure I'd of been Battle Group Commander and you'd of ended up as a disappointed Company Commander. By the way, The Woodlands High School just graduated 996 seniors. I'd hate to be sitting through that ceremony. My class ('63) had around 570 grads and that seemed like a loooong night.
Place: 66erville Comments: John, don't you see and feel the connection? Seems no matter where you go or what you do, you make a SOC 66 connection. Seems that this is where you belong. Why fight it??
Place: Allen, TX Comments: Sorry for yet another post. I have my blond brain on today. Don and I graduated in 1966, not 1961. DUUUHHHHHH!!! Promise. This is the last post of the day for me!!
Place: Allen, TX Comments: OOooops. I didn't finish my Radke story. Anyway, John, the woman was Ron and Don's mom. Wish I could remember her name. She seemed like a very nice woman.
Place: Allen, TX Comments: Hey, Southworth...on the Radke note....Back around 1982, my wife and I were helping with a fund-raiser for the church in Plano we were going to. We were given a list of members to visit. One was a family I didn't know. They had a Jewish last name. The husband was not home; so, we spoke with the wife. Before we left, she wanted to show us their house. They had one bedroom fixed up with some exercise equipment. And on one wall were photos of her family on one side of their picture, and his family on the other. I took one look at her side and said, "Radke." She almost fell over and asked what I meant by that. I pointed to the picture on the top and said, "That's Ron Radke. He graduated from SOC with my brother in 1961. And, the one on the bottom is Don Radke. I graduated from SOC with him in 1961." She almost fell over backwards. Small world, ain't it.
Place: Richardson Comments: TNX for the info guys. Now if Mike Chafin will contact me via Em at sandylynn@sbcglobal.net I will be happy to give him contact info for Barry. The rain this morning was wonderful. Hope others around here on the tight once-weekly watering schedule got some rain too!!!
Place: Chester Clinic E.R. - 1953 Comments: Make that "1953" rather than '58. Perhaps I sustained more damage than I recall?
Place: The Woodlands, TX Comments: In the "small world" department, my latest Facebook friend is one Cyndia Chafin Wilson, younger sister of Duane and Mike Chafin. Unlike us lucky SOC grads, fate took her to high school in Desoto after a wave of demographic changes prompted her family to leave Oak Cliff. She has lived in Rockport, Texas for 17 years now and boldly and freely admits to being neighbors with Barbara & Susan Crume and Linda Cartwright (whom I don't know). Trip down Memory Lane ... last week I was pondering the many times my wife has been in the hospital and was feeling most grateful that my one trip to the Emergency Room came in 1958 at age eight. At the time I lived on W. Brownlee St. and was playing on a swingset at a neighbor's home across the street from ours. I was standing on the crossbar of the A-frame at one end of the swingset ... kind of showing off. I fell backwards and landed on my right arm - breaking it just below the elbow. That may have been the last time the Radke's allowed me on their property. I looked up to their son Ron (later class of '61) and somewhat tolerated his little brother Donnie.
Place: 66erville Comments: SNL; for what's it is worth, Duane had a little brother named Mike.
Place: Richardson, TX Comments: Mike Chafin - you will need to contact me to get Barry's info. I have tried the Em you gave & it won't go through. I've called the # you gave & I get a recording telling me you are not available ( in both English & Spanish) & then it hangs up. Contact me at: sandylynn@sbcglobal.net I also need to confirm "who" you are as we don't show a Mike Chafin in our class. Only a Duane Lee Chafin. Shoot me an Em & I can take care of your request. I do not post classmate's personal info on the GB and I only give out contact info when I am sure to whom I am talking with. I do this with all requests so as to ensure our classmate's privacy. Thank you & let me hear from you.
Place: Richardson Comments: Michael - I tried to send you Barry's info but the Em caused an error & it said it couldn't go thru. I then called the # you gave & encountered a recorded msg saying you were unavailable & then it hung up. Unable to leave a msg. I know AZ is 2 hrs earlier than Dallas, that's why I called so late as it's already after 10 pm here. I'll try again tmo. You may want to leave another GB note & put your email again. Perhaps you mistyped it the first time. You can reach me via my Email. Click on the RED Email above right. Thanks, Sandy Lynn |
