The "treats' the squirrels get are the 10-12 sunflower seeds I use as bait.  They get to eat those while I raise the garage door & back gate on Don's Edge.  But I do take them to the faaar west side of the big park.  We live on the east side about 3 blocks from Brand Rd.  So it's probably about at least a mile or more from my house & where I let them out.

Don keeps asking me if I'm ready for him to get rid of the squirrels.  His way is more like Dale's!!  I keep saying No.

Jack,
Now that you mention it, that is a phrase heard very often around the Smiley household.

Gee Dale, is that the only time you hear Y say that?
SNL, sounds like you are giving the tree rats a reason to return. A road trip with treats and visit a new area. Not only will they come back for another, they'll tell all their friends and family.
Tony how's goings on with the neighbors??

Ahhh, the skunk dilemma. Most of you will not want to hear this response but they asked. Ammunition makers have a .22 caliber shell that we call "Rat Shot" It's like a .22 shot gun shell with very small BB's . It is effective from far enough away that the skunk wont hit you if he sprays but if the shot hits the cage it will not hurt the trap. I usually stand way back and yell encouragement to Yuvonne as she dispenses the varmint. She is a great shot and is often heard to say just before the shot "Go ahead.... make my day".

Sandy...I think all the critters you are catching and then setting free are beating you back home....LOL!!!

I was wondering the same thing about the skunk as Shortcake pointed out!  We tried one of those cages once while trying to catch whatever was taking the lid off of a metal trash can in our garage and eating ALL of our dog food.  Well we got him!  We found a big field rat hanging between two bicycle spokes...dead!  I screamed for a solid five minutes.  Finally realized he was also able to steal the food from the trap and escape before the door dropped.  I guess he just ate himself to death.

BTW-I'll do my best to save a little of the banana pudding ...[wink]

My only question smiley is when you catch a skunk in that trap how do you approach it. I mean that has to really make him mad!

Shame, shame. [nono]   Mine are treated to a snack before being given a free ride to  the park! But I'm beginning to think when I cart one away another takes it's place!!

Living where we do , we keep a have-a heart trap set most nights. We catch lots of skunks, coons and the occasional squirrel. I did catch one small bobcat and once there was a snake inside the trap when I approached but he left quickly. I applaud your habit of relocating but it seems like every time I catch a varmint.... The Lord calls the little feller home.

You two are so funny!!!  Don & I bought a squirrel cage at the local Feed Store in Wylie.  I have a bird feeder just outside my home ofc window.  I also put seeds on the ground.  Tiger & I love watching the pretty redbirds.  3 babies this yr.

Problem:  We live close to the park & our neighborhood has lots of big trees, thus we have lots of pesky squirrels!  I put the bird seed on a plastic lid off a peanut can & it's just behind the little trigger lever.  So far in April & May I've caught 12!  I'm going for a Baker's Dozen!  I give them a free ride over to the west side of Breckinridge Park.  They're probably having a family reunion over there by now. And no, nobody at the store asked if I needed help out with it.  [tongue] [rofl]

OK, I know we are old. The coons and hogs and squirrels have been tearing up our deer feeders to get to the protein we feed in the summer. I stopped at J&L sporting Goods in Cross Plains to buy TWO small varmint cages to put over the timers to stop the wild animals from crawling up and twirling the motor and emptying the feed on the ground. The cages are about one foot square and made of fairly light weight mesh. Each cage weighs about 2 pounds and comes collapsed so you can easily carry them in one hand. I was parked 10 feet from the door to the store and the counter was another 10 feet inside the door. At this point I might mention that the young lady that operates the store is quite a legend in these parts and truckers seem to park at the Dairy Queen across the street in hopes of seeing her out in the yard where they keep the feeders and stuff. Yuvonne and I often joke about how cute she is and Von thinks I go there just to see her. After paying for the two items that brazen hussy had the gall to look up at me and in a most serious manner asked  " Do you need me to carry those out to the truck for you?"  I said "Do I really look that old and without a pause she smiled and said Well, Yeah."

I'll still go in to look at her but I'm gonna let the hairy leg guy take my order from now on.

Jack, you took the words right out of my mouth!!  LOL  I was gng to suggest the same thing!   So far it's Jack & I and our spouses . . .  any one else gng to make it to Gordy's for Memorial Day celebrations??

I s/w Eileen Sorrell this mrng.  During the surgery yesterday afternoon they were able to repair Smokey's fractured vertebrae, but nothing else.  He is back on the breathing tube.  Still has internal bleeding but not as bad as it was.  He actually opened his eyes for a moment while Tommy Sorrel was gripping his hand & talking to him. Unfortunately they will not be able to assess the extent of his injuries until he is able to communicate with them.  Gov Perry & many of his many ex-bosses have come by to see him.  Smokey is still in critical condition and needs as many prayers as his friends can muster.

Sandy, thanks for the update on Smokey.  Seems like there is just a little bit of good news and that is encouraging.  Continuing to keep him in our thoughts and prayers.

Please tell Gordy that we really appreciate his invitation for the Memorial Day celebration but we will be celebrating Bruce's birthday which is tomorrow as well as my son's birthday which is Sunday.  Guess what Bruce is preparing??  If you drive into our neighborhood, you will surely smell it!  He is really getting good at smoking meats.  I know you all will have a wonderful meal.  Thinking about adding some banana pudding!
