Place: Oregun Comments: We still have our 1st frig, a 1970 Kenmore, still works and used to hold my keg of beer. Now it hold leftovers so it has been demoted but still working. I have 2 Craftsman power tools I bought in the early 70's and both work like the day I bought them. I've bought newer Craftsman power tools and they haven't lasted as well, even with less use.
Place: Light Rain in Richardson Comments: I'm right there with you Sammy. I bought my first set of washer/dryer in the mid 70's. Still had it when Don & I got married in 1985. Bought 2nd set in or about 1998 and I bought the 3rd set here in 2011. All have been Kenmore!
Place: Lake Tawakoni Comments: One of the first things Sarah and I did was to replace the original 1997 water heater here in the lake house. The plumber that installed our new one ( Home Depot ) said it was a disaster waiting to happen. When he drained it, nothing but rust colored water came out. On second thought, we could have had new flooring in the washroom, kitchen and dinning room. We will be married 46 years this coming July and have our third set of washer and dryer. Sears Kenmore is still the best. Lake Tawakoni is up 9 feet since January. Time to go fishing.
Place: Growing Moss in Richardson Comments: So it's not just me, things really aren't made as good as they used to be?! Back in the old days if you paid more for a better quality product it would last much longer. Now the higher priced, supposedly better quality brands, don't last long at all without a problem. From cars to appliances, we are surrounded by inferior products, most of which, are made in China or some other foreign country. I have a small hand-held mixer I have used for more than 22 yrs. It has mixed many a cake, pie, cookie and more for a long time. Still running, but I worry it will die soon. I've looked everywhere for another as back-up but they are big and klunky and not as versatile as the one I have. Now days, all they want you to buy is a big sit-on-the-counter stand mixer. And those things run $200 to $449 easy!! I don't want a big huge mixer sitting on my counter. Alas, I dread the day my wonderful old hand mixer kicks the bucket!!
Place: Garland USA Comments: I've been in the same home for 38 years and am on the third water heater - first two were Rheem and the last one is a Whirlpool. The sales person at Lowe's indicated they only last six to eight years now. The last one has been drained completely on two separate occasions. I suppose a new water heater is on the near horizon for us as well. That old saying that "you get what you pay for" is not exactly what it used to be.
Place: Cypress Springs Comments: Ok I am really tired of rain! If we get much more our dock will be under water! We had the lightening and thunder and rain until about 3:30 this morning. I just know it is going to take a tree or two out. That is the only thing I do not like about living in the middle of trees.
Place: Soggy with more rain on the way Comments: Yep Rod, better start lookin'! Since moving into this house a little over 7 yrs ago I've certainly noticed how brand new things don't last very long without having a problem! As you may remember, when we bought the house we had the kitchen updated. All cabinets sanded and repainted, added some add'l trim pieces and bought all new appliances. B4 it was a year old our new fridge was freezing my veggies in the bins in the fridge. Just made it under the full warranty and they had to replace the entire thing! Seems the insulation between freezer & frige was cracked. Not quiet 3 yrs into it the panel on the double oven went out. Nothing but black! Had to replace it but all I had to pay was $65 serv chg. Panel cost over $200. Had them out on microwave too, it kept squeaking like a mouse when I used it. Keep in mind, I didn't buy cheap, I bought top of the line appliances, which makes it even worse. Now one of the lights on my stove is out. Ea of the 4 knobs controls a burner & has a nice red backlite on it. Now only 3 lite up. So much for quality appliances.
Place: Oregun Comments: We've been in our house for 44 years and we are on our third one so by your calculation I am due for a new water heater. Guess I had better get ready.
Place: Richardson Comments: Our house was almost 11 yrs old when we bought it 7 yrs ago. They had just put in a new hot water heater in the garage. However the one up in the attic was original. It hung in there for another 4 yrs (making it 15 yrs old). But when it started making those weird noises and moaning & groaning . . . it had to go! Most of ours over the yrs have lasted 12 to 15 yrs. But, we don't have kids around all the time, just the two of us.
Place: bigD Comments: Jack, it seems like water heaters don't last as long as they use to. We built this house in 1990 and working on the third heater.
Place: Sachse Comments: Sounds like you had a busy day, SNL. I could have got in, showered and got out without you ever knowing. But we did get the new water heater installed and working. Nice, long, hot shower followed. Plumber told me new regulations regarding water heaters went into effect April 1st, but the new water heaters would not be available until mid to late May. So I don't know if we got the better one or not as good of what is coming, but I got what was available when I NEEDED it! From what the plumber said they are adding insulation around the tank, making them larger around. Seems to me, what we need is a tank that doesn't rust.
Place: Richardson Comments: Jack I am sorry I'm just now ready this bec YES you could have come over 7 used our shower! I was a the pool at 9:30 this mrng for about an hour setting up tables and icing down drinks. The big HOA pool party was today and guess who bought all the food & drinks and set it all up! Tired and worn out me! I went back at noon and didn't get home until 4:30. I'm whipped!!! been on my feet most all day long and outside, although I tried to stay under the cabana as much a I could. I'm going to go put my feet up and watch one of my Baking shows. I think it's called Spring Baking. Jack, I sure hope by now you have a new hot water heater and finally got your hot shower! If not . . . Glynda may be sleeping in the other bedroom.
Place: Sachse Comments: Nothing like coming in from mowing the yard and finding you have no hot water. Shut off the water flow and the gas, call SEVERAL plumbers till you find one available and willing to come out on Sunday and not charge an arm and a leg, go to Lowes and buy a water heater, bring it home and unpack it, and drain the old one. Now waiting on the plumber to finish his previous call of clearing a sewer line. Said he thought he be back by 4:30. Sandy, can I come over and use your NEW shower??
Place: Sachse Comments: Sandy Mc & Janice, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Thoughts and prayers are with you.
Place: bigD Comments: Janice and Sandra Mc. I hope it's not true about Jana. I'm so sorry to hear it. |
