Place: Melissa TX USA Comments: SNL, glad you heard from Gordy and that he's ok. I had totally forgotten he had the place in Canton. Ada Ann, I will certainly keep you in my thoughts and prayers for an easy surgery. I opted out of the surgery on my nose and left eyebrow. To add insult to injury so to speak....Bruce just went yesterday to the MOHS surgeon for four biopsies. Hoping for better results for him.
Place: Richardson Comments: I talked with Gordy early Monday as he has 2 concession tents at 1st Monday in Canton. He has had them for a long time. Also just this weekend he and 2 other food vendors opened in a building that was built for them by 1st Monday. the building got about 6 inches of water/mud in it from the creek behind them rising. His tent was blown away and some Eq. However, everyone was safe and alive!! Gordy said it was just after 4:30pm when management started telling everyone a tornado had been spotted and to take cover. Sirens went off. Gordy said they went out side the bldg and could see the tornado. They all ran to the bathrooms and took the only shelter they had. He said the tornado took that little jog and crossed I 20, it had been headed straight to 1st Monday!!! He and others came back Sunday and got the water/mud out of the building and will need to purchase new tent and eq, but he said he was very scared and thankful to be alive! I've been reading in the paper this morning about the backyard wedding that was about to take place. The bride & her sister were having their makeup done. Her sisters house was a big 2 story beautiful home on lots of acres. It was going to be an outdoor wedding. They heard loud noises, when they looked out debris was flying. They had no time to get to the underground shelter in the back. The sisters and 3 kids hid in the upstairs closet holding the door. They were hit with debris but hung on. When they came out the home was destroyed! One of the sister's step-dad was killed but everyone else survived. Note: When they came out of the closet her Escalade was in one of the bedrooms, total destruction everywhere, yet, when they looked in the bathroom where they had been doing their makeup . . . there hung her long white lace wedding dress just where they had left it and without a scratch!!
Place: Plano Comments: Were any of our classmates affected by the Saturday tornadoes east of Dallas around Canton, TX? First Monday was going on this same day. I hope and pray that everyone is ok!
Place: Richardson Comments: Darn Ada Ann, sorry you're having to go thru that. Will pray they get it on the first pass and it heals well and quickly. Dad bought a small fishing boat when I was in the 4th grade. The guy threw in an old pair of skis. I've been water skiing since I was 10 until about age 38 and then added snow skiing in my mid-20s. Way too many sunburns and sun both winter and summer. But who knew!!?? I'm praying I don't get any more BCCs.
Place: NH Comments: I will be having MOHS surgery on Thur....on my forehead.....basal cell. It is just above my eyebrow and I asked the surgeon to please not raise my very thin eyebrow! I guess we are all paying for that Texas sun.
Place: Richardson Comments: Carolyn - I too am sorry you're going thru the pain and annoyance the surgery can produce. I had 6 BCCs removed. 3 were scrapped and no big deal. The other 3 were done with the Mohs procedure. (BCC is what they call Basal Cell Carcinoma) To any one who's dermatologist says, "Oh I can do it", if it's anywhere on your face or head please see a dermatologist who is a surgeon or, even better, a plastic surgeon because it's more complicated than a regular dermatologist should be allowed to do! But as Toni said, unless the next BCC is on my face and a life or death situation . . . I'm done with Mohs surgery! Keep working on you nose Carolyn and it may be a good idea to see another dermatologist or a surgeon if the healing doesn't greatly improve in the next 2 weeks.
Place: Melissa TX USA Comments: Oh Carolyn, I'm sorry you are going through all the pain and suffering too. No one ever warned us 20-30 years ago that we would be going through all of this because we spent too much time in the sun! I hope you continue to improve daily. Between you, Sandy and me, I think we've had enough of this surgery stuff. I've decided to take my chances from here on!
Place: Sugar Land Comments: Toni, I feel bad for you. I had a similar issue, but not as serious as yours. I had a basal cell carcinoma on my nose and the dermatologist said she could do it in the office. It was smaller than the head of a pencil eraser, so I let her do it..one layer removed, but 6 stitches later and the pain! I drove home before deadening wore off. This was 5 wks ago and I have to wear silicone cream night and day for 4 months. Wish I had gone to plastic surgeon. It's still bumpy and red. My sister-in-law, Elaine Amos - Gentry passed away from cancer this week. She was a SOCite, don't know which year, but probably '63 since she would be 72 in Aug. Some of your friends may have known her.
Place: Richardson Comments: It's really good seeing you post again. Like you, I tend to believe my Dr. when they look you me in the eye and say, " I've done this surgery hundreds of times and it's a simple procedure. You'll be able to go back to work in 1-3 days." The last time I'll took those words as true was Nov 2013 when I had "simple" sinus surgery. And that ended up being a major deal that took two months to heal and before I could go out in public. Nightmare!! Glad you can now laugh about it and look back on it as one of those "older but wiser" tales! ![]() It's never a simple surgery when its our surgery, it's only simple to the Dr.! So happy you're doing better and wearing those ballcaps.
Place: Melissa TX USA Comments: Hi Everyone! Gee, I didn't realize how long it had been since I last checked in on the GB. I've been a little busy lately (understatement) dealing with a surgery. Although it was a day surgery and I was told I could drive myself, I'll never, ever do that again. I had a basal cell carcinoma on my scalp that I had been suffering with for over a year. After talking to the doctor, I thought this should be a routine day surgery - no problem. Was I wrong! When he mentioned the need for a skin graft, I freaked out as I couldn't imagine having two (head and chest) incisions to deal with at the same time on my left side, but had to wait until the day after surgery when I had to return. Nobody mentioned a two-day surgery! I was in luck (wrong!) as my doctor said he would be able to stitch everything up! I'm thinking....this is going to be a piece of cake so-to-speak. After two hours of working on my head on the second day, I was released to drive home with a gauze-wrapped head. When I finally got into the car and seeing myself in the rear-view mirror, I knew this was not going to go well. It hasn't but after almost four weeks, I can gently move my few hairs with a comb. Did I mention that all the doctor prescribed was super strength Tylenol? I am now the poster grandmother for pain management but I think I'm going to survive. Thank the Good Lord for a wonderful caregiver - Bruce! He even bought me a wardrobe of baseball caps! Thanks again SNL for checking on me and your many offers to help me.
Place: Richardson Comments: I'll be seeing y'all in September - - both nights! Looking forward to it, I know several people from '67 and after our 50th reunion I can add 2 more . . . Carl & Shirley Mullins! Of course Carl has several aliases so maybe his other names should count for more than one person?
Place: Dallas Comments: We saw Marvin and Shirley Mullins today. Shirley's sister passed and her funeral was today in Alba, Tx. Shirley said to say high to all and anyone attending the SOC '67 fiftieth reunion , " See you in September".
Place: Richardson Comments: As a reminder - - Carol does not have a PC at home, she can only access our GB when she is at work. Until she can return to work, she won't be able to respond. But she promised at our Spring Mini she was going to get a PC for home before she retires. Hope you are doing well Carol!!!!
Place: Carthage, TX Comments: Carol here's praying all goes well with your surgery. Pleas keep us posted on how it goes. Take care.
Place: Richardson Comments: I know what you mean Carol. I hate it when a Dr. says, " It's an easy surgery, I've done this surgery hundreds of times." Yeah, it's easy for them!! Take it easy Carol and do as they say as far as reading and resting your eyes. Good Luck kiddo . . . let us know later when you can how you are doing. |
