Ronnie, I don't know what I would have done in high school without the band!  Most people I know did not like high school (they did not go to SOC) but I loved it. I even liked to go to school and learn things! Band people had built in friends wherever they were. And band kids were quirky, like I felt I was, so it all worked out! And weren't we lucky to go to school when children were taught to play a musical instrument as part of the regular curriculum if they wanted to do so! Wasn't it free?
Jerry, I don't remember that weekend but I remember little about most things that happened! And, I was not even drinking or taking drugs!
So, I am about three-quarters through the book In the New World: Growing up America from the Sixties to the Eighties by Lawrence Wright.  He is a year or so older than we are and it is his story about growing up in Dallas and beyond.  So far it is very interesting!
Happy Summer! I love the flowers, Sandy!

I know what you mean Paul, I just logged on, saw the images and went to the kitchen.  I'm sipping some coffee & eating a molasses cookie.  Maybe that image wasn't the best choice, at least not for my waistline.  [biggrin]

Recv'd Bobby & Bonnie Dove's registration last night!

Bob is the one that gave me one of Pegs paintings - not Peg. Bobby said with the blonde hair it reminded him of me - or Linda since she is the one with long hair when we were young. Sorry I hit post before preview on the other post.

I just read where the U.S. Department of Agriculture is recalling 228,000 pounds of SPAM believed to be contaminated with bits of metal particles.

What surprised me most was that over half of it was stored in a barn on Dale Smiley's ranch.

Sammy, loved your Peter, Paul & Mary story. Having worked at the Dallas Summer Musicals our senior year at SOC, and being a featured performer in The Gridiron Show for 7 years, I will have to share some of my stories with you. I did meet Mary Martin (Peter Pan) at the Summer Musicals. We remained friends until the day she died (on my birthday). One of the sweetest women I have ever met. Saw her for the last time when we ran into one another at the downtown Neiman-Marcus.

Sally, Thanks for sharing a little of your life with us. We all love you. Most of us guys had a crush on you. I never knew you had married David. I always liked him. Sorry that marriage did not work out. But you have a great husband today. Wish we could see your sweet, smiling face more often. But, I am glad you are happy in NYC. And, I know your heart will forever be in Texas. Thank you for happy memories from T.L. Marsalis, Zumwalt and SOC. I always have a soft spot in my heart for you, along with all of us in the Class of 1966.

A very happy & safe Memorial Day weekend to all.  And yes, I want to say Thank You to my husband and all our SOC friends who served in the military and to several who have just retired from the military. (Fay & Paul) I don't believe Ron Butler has retired yet.  Have you Ron?

We have no idea how lucky we are to live in the USA.  God Bless us all.

I just caught up reading the guestbook after being out of pocket for a couple of weeks.  It is always interesting to see what is happening.  I always wondered about Sally and David.  There was a weekend in 1967(if my memory serves me) when I went to Austin to visit David.  At that time he and
Sally were dating.  They apparently had a misunderstanding and Sally and I spent an evening visiting
while David was out of pocket.  I am not sure if Sally remembers that or not.  I do remember that David transferred to Columbia the next year and I have never heard from him since.

I think this weekend would be a good time for each of us to remember those in our class who have served in the military with special emphasis on those who gave their ultimate so that we can all enjoy this great country.  Avery special Memorial Day and a hardy thanks to each of our military friends.

I am surprised that David did not want to talk to anyone. Maybe he is still embarassed about being divorced but...I did not go to the 10th reunion, probably out of embarassment but I remember Mary Pat Berkeley later saying that no one cared about divorces anymore and that freed me. No one in New York ever cared as far as I can tell.  Also, almost all of my cousins and all of my sisters have been divorced so.. How times changed very quickly!
I worked at Columbia when David White went to medical school-- I was a typist and I still could not type! Over the years I got more interesting positions but they were all administrative. The last was being in charge of processing all of the immigration documents for the foreign professors and researchers that allowed them to work at Columbia. Columbia turned out the be a good employer  - the jobs were interesting- and my life was easy since  I walked to work.  And Columbia gave me affordable housing.
Just for the record, we avoid Times Square as much as we can.  The only time we go there is to get out of the subway at Times Square to go somewhere nearby.  There are so many people!!! It can make your crazy!!
I totally remember the English class.  We had a good time there also! But I don't remember David in the class.  We "met" at the University of Texas.
I am still reading the book about Dallas. The author seems to have graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1965 and he talks a lot about the Vietnam War, his relationship with his father, etc. Each family is different but still it is close enough to home for anyone who grew up there at that time.  There is a lot of history that follows the story. I have only read 40% of the book, according to kindle, but it is very interesting. I will keep you posted.

Well I'll be darn!  I always wondered if you & David got together because I saw the way he looked at you in Sr English. We had Mr. Waddell.  Jack & I actually tracked down David White for our 40th but he refused to talk with us and wouldn't return any phone calls.  After leaving numerous VMs we finally gave up because it was obvious he didn't want to be contacted or talk with us.

FYI to Paul - - Sally & Christos came to our 40th and I can tell you she looks exactly the same as she did in H.S.  Same long curly blonde hair (maybe it's gray now but it was always very light colored anyway) and same sweet smile.

Sally - weren't you a professor or teacher at Columbia?  I know you were employed by Columbia University and retired from it.  Thanks for responding, it's always nice to know you found the "one" and are living a good life.  And yes, if you're a Texan, you always miss it!!

Sally,
Thanks so much for sharing your story with us. It is intriguing to see how the details of each classmate’s life play out. Since I found out you were in NYC, when I watch the live camera feeds from Times Square (I have an app that shows live feeds from around the world), I think, “Maybe Sally will just happen to walk by while I am watching.” It would be great to see you since I missed the 50th and didn’t see you then. Have a great Memorial Day with your family. We have been traveling and are going to keep ours low key.

Okay, I will answer the question as to why I am in NYC to the best of my ability.  I married David White when I was a junior in college. At that point he was attending Columbia University here in NYC.  We divorced three years later (no children were involved, to paraphrase Aaron Watson-- you all know him?).  I was too embarassed to go back to Texas immediately so I got an apartment and stayed thinking I would go back "soon".  But I then met Christo and stayed.   I never wanted to stay here but things like that happen. We had a lot of fun, had a child, lived our lives and now that I am retired, I think I live in the best place for retired people who can walk.  I have everything I need on a daily basis within 5 blocks.  Such a boring life but a great one!  But I still miss Texas!! I have a lot of nostalgia for my childhood and Dallas but you can't go home again ...
We are getting ready for the Memorial Day weekend.  We are going to Rhode Island.  For some reason my daughter and her boyfriend love it there and we are going with them to see why they like it so much.  Hope you all have a good time also!
