Place: LV, TX Comments: I'm encouraged by the updates I've seen from some of the folks who've posted notes regarding medical issues - SNL/Don, Paul, Randy, Ada, James - but will continue my prayers for all of you, as well as 'Speedy', Alvin, Charles, and Odis' family. Sandy - I'm all-in for the next mini, whenever/wherever you want to hold it - and El Fenix sure sounds like a great idea for dinner afterward - eh, Paul? Randy - Whether you're able to make it to the next mini or not, I've been in touch with former classmate & Coast Guard buddy, David Hamm, who informed me that several SOC guys ('64, '65, '66) meet for lunch at the Oak Cliff El Fenix every month or so. I asked him to let me know when they plan the next one & I'll pass the word here. They just had one on 2/21 and posted some pix on FB, which I'm not on, but my wife, Kathy, is and she e-mailed copies. I called David and he ID'd the guys as: (left side) John Parker '64, Gary Dagley '66 & Reid McKay (Zumwalt?); (right side) Dan Keller, Charles Brooks & Bill Harvey, all '65, & Mike Logan (yr?). I can't post the pix w/o a URL, so here are 2 FB links from David's acct that I hope you'll be able to open. If not, find David Hamm, scroll down to 2/21 & look for a cluster of 5 old guys mostly wearing ball caps: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10213671194917417&set=pcb.10213671221558083&type=3&__tn__=HH-R&eid=ARCUH_dYSfPykJ4WRELSSgRMJJ0vLRN0kteJOK04PRrHhaSCSYnQ3V7q eM1tf9zoibEcMCCfVLZBhZBT https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10213671210517807&set=pcb.10213671221558083&type=3&__tn__=HH-R&eid=ARAK8gQa_AlTT7ggsx8QbKsoY-qifkNXzv6pynIttiIwQN4T3KVNTYIw3G22EkoOq-fXYX4iNLj4mKZ-
Place: Allen, Texas Comments: Sad about Coach Norman. He was my neighbor when I was at SOC. And, he was best friends with my cousin's husband, Kenneth Brashear, basketball coach and science teacher at Adamson. He was a very nice man.
Place: Richardson Comments: I want to let y'all know that Coach Bruce Norman passed away a week or so ago and I saw it on FB late Friday. I've tried to find an obit but no luck. Here's the best I can do, I've put a link to the FB post by my friend Tanya and it's OK, it's safe. I wanted you to know but this was all I could get. He was such a good teacher and coach and I loved watching him & his wife dance across the floor at our reunions. RIP Coach Norman, I hope you're dancing in heaven! https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10156884482802295&set=a.10150204504277295&type=3&eid=ARBI4ZIT0ErlNvU2YEQxxOzt8WrMgtf5o_eNUgc91QzqFpop6k3V94xSYwix51lya17II3KeFkgZAwJq
Place: Oak Cliff Comments: '66 Friends: Several of us are already members of the Facebook Public Group, OAK CLIFF BOOMERS, and if you're not already consumed by computer time, the group fosters discussions about many old places and times in our old Oak Cliff: restaurants, theaters, recreational venues, times and drive-ins and streets where we "cruised" and drag-raced, etc. I find it interesting though the lists of brief comments can tend to go on and on, but no one needs to read everything. Maybe some of you will find it interesting some of the time. Randy
Place: Richardson Comments: Glad to see we still have a sense of humor! Randy, no not the Oak Cliff El Fenix. We're talking about the one right up the road (Hwy 75) from where we have the Minis. It's at Plano Pkwy & Hwy 75, right next to the Hooters, you can't miss it! We have the Minis that run from 2 to 6 pm in a hotel bar area for a reason. One important reason is so no one has to pay anything to attend. Also, restaurants aren't going to let 27 to 38 or so people roam around their restaurant and take up table space for 4 or more hours. We've had lots of Minis at the Hyatt, the Double Tree and the Holiday Inn (where we had the B-day party) which are all very close to each other at 75 & Campbell. Then when we leave around 6:00ish we just go a few blocks up 75 to Plano Pkwy and can be seated for dinner. I really hope you get better soon as walking around with oxygen can be a bit tricky when you have a fireplace going. Don had a very good day Friday, 3-1. No pain what-so-ever. He's still getting some minor little shocks but nothing to worry about. I do believe the new meds are starting to work on that darn trigeminal nerve. My thoughts and prayers for recovery are still being sent up on behalf of Paul, Randy, James, Ada Ann and Speedy. God Bless our class of '66.
Place: Oak Cliff, just west of I35 from SOC, behind St. Elizabeth's church on Hampton -- just north of Ledbetter Comments: All of our friends facing health challenges are fully in my prayers. I do care about all of us. (I now regret staying away from our gatherings down through the years, but the 50th [and Rick Mitchell] brought me back.) I think of you all often, and my '66 DEN stays near my sofa. Now then. When you mention "El Fenix" you really do mean the one in Oak Cliff on Colorado Blvd., right? I mean, we actually COULD meet in Oak Cliff every few decades; it you haven't heard it's what's happenin' now, and the business generated here is doing well. Property values have soared. Again, prayers for all while my wife "helps me remember" to not get too close to the fireplace with my oxygen tubes in.
Place: Plano Comments: Sandy, count us in for April 13th and El Fenix. Looking forward to seeing y’all
Place: Edmond OK Comments: Sandy, you da woman! 🤩
Place: Richardson Comments: You got it Paul. If you're coming in from OKLA we'll humor you by going to El Fenix. It's the least we can do.
Place: Edmond OK Comments: I am going to start lobbying early for El Fenix after the mini. That would make the event a “Grand Slam.” ⚾️🌮🌮🌮⚾️ I hope others agree. Please oh please. 😇
Place: Richardson Comments: Amen to that Paul. The Class of '66 has always been special and we remain close today. Let's all do our best to make a Mini in April.
Place: Edmond OK Comments: Sandy, I appreciate your comments and assurances of support (and those of others) so much. They have made great strides in chemotherapy but it still knocks you way off the “normal setting.” You have to adjust to a new normal and set that as your standard for how you are going to feel day to day. Some days almost feel normal normal but that doesn’t last. Most of the time, if life before chemo was a 9 or 10, it is now a 4-6. And it impacts most of your “systems” so you are kind of in a haze at times. I believe God allows things in our lives for our ultimate good and for me, what Don, Randy, Speedy, and others (don’t mean to skip over anyone) are going or have gone through has served to show just what our class is all about. I prefer to refer to it as the class WITH class. I desperately want to make the mini (April sounds great) and am trusting no hiccups that would prevent that. Any later (e.g May) and I will have a procedure that could keep me out of circulation for awhile. I hope these challenges for our class will keep everybody checking in on the GB so we can keep tabs on each other.
Place: Richardson Comments: If there's anything to be learned from all the trials and tribulations our class is going thru . . . we are there for each other! It helps to know others care and are praying for you. I can assure you Paul, you and the others I have mentioned are in my prayers each night. How are you doing Paul? I don't know from personal experience, but I do know from a few close to me that chemo is tough! I hope you are hanging in there. If you ever have doubts . . . just ask Ada Ann about kicking cancers butt! She's done it twice. I am planning to have an April Mini, God willing and the creeks don't rise. That's an old saying from my dad. Easter is 4-21, so we may want to do it on Saturday 4-13. It's still a little far to make a definite plan, but I'm looking at that date. What do y'all think?? I know this group is beat up and not moving very fast but I would hope this would be the incentive for all of us to put our best effort into making a Mini. Life is short, don't miss a chance to see good friends!
Place: Edmond OK Comments: It is so reassuring to know that the Class of 66 has our backs...and rest assured, whatever each of you has going on...I’ve got yours...
Place: Cold in Richardson Comments: Sammy, I do remember that awful experience for Sarah & you. It's true, I went 36 hours without sleep and pure adrenalin & coffee were all that were keeping me going. I know you & Sarah were scared out of your wits because Don & I sure were. Thank God Sarah is doing great. Hey, when you have a moment, send me your new address, seems like I remember you saying y'all moved to Plano? Don and I saw 4 doctors this week & it's only Thursday. But the good news is that the cardiologist & heart surgeon both said his heart is doing fine! No problems with the surgery. In fact, if it wasn't for that darn trigeminal nerve, he would have been doing P.T. all this week. The excruciating pain has gone but he is still getting what we call "after shocks". They are painful, but not like the #10 that sent us to the ER and that kept coming all night.. We adjusted the nerve meds a little yesterday when we saw the Neurologist. Things seemed a bit better today, so I'm praying this is a good sign and things will get a little better each day. I would still very much appreciate it if you would include Don in your prayers. Please ask God to stop the trigeminal pain and let him heal. And, please remember Paul S., Jame Y., Randy C., and Speedy H. in your prayers too, as they each have severe health issues too. God Bless the SOC class of '66. It's been a long week so I'm going to get ready for bed and watch a little TV. Goodnight. |
