If you went to SOC in 1966 . . . you knew The Mystics.  But there is some misinformation going around FB, so let me clear up the rumors and state the facts.

There were 5 Mystics.  Unfortunately, 3 have left us.  On 1-9-16 Robert Faries (pronounced as Ferris) passed away. On 3-7-17, Ron Jobe passed away.  And sadly, on 3-4-19, David Mitchell passed away.  That leaves Danny Fugate and Glenn Strubble as the two remaining Mystics.

This was very sad news when I first read about it late last night, and forwarded to all those on the military vets' e-mail  distribution list, and became sadder tonight upon reading the obit.

Sandy - As I told Rick in a separate e-mail, my older son is moving from Corpus this weekend and stopping in for a brief visit on his way up to Mesa, AZ, where he's relocating for his job.  So, I'll be unable to attend David's chapel service on Sat., but will try to take some time off to attend his military service at DFW cemetery on Mon.

Before I go, here's a link I shared with our vets, that many of us have seen before, but may have forgotten about.  It's a very fitting time to resurrect it as a tribute to 'Doc' and take a trip down memory lane with the Mystics: https://garagehangover.com/mystics/

One other sad note you'll see further down in the posted comments is by Charlene Faries, dated January 17, 2016 at 8:34 PM, quote: "My brother passed away Saturday January 9, 2016."

I heard the news about David from Lincoln, and on FB.  I'm very sad to read about it, it's a tough thing for his entire family.

It is with a sad and broken heart that I must tell you our friend, David Mitchell, passed away this morning.  Toni called to tell me she had just seen it on FB, I wasn't aware yet.  I just checked and now his wife, Shirley, has also posted the news.

Once arrangements are made I will post them here.  DOC the music man . . .  RIP my friend!  Keep the music going in heaven.

Don L. - I too was able to open both links , no problem.  Most of our gang  are on FB, so many may have seen the photos.

I' going to start making plans for Saturday, 4-13, for our next Mini.  I'll need to contact the hotels and see who the lucky winner is for hosting our Mini. [biggrin]  It would be so good if Randy, Paul, Don L., Speedy and James could join us.  Prayers for their healing.

This is going to be a great week, albeit COLD.  Don had zero trigeminal pain on Fri, minor ones Sat and none Sunday.  Since it's so darn cold outside this week, we're going to our local Lowe's barely 2 miles from our house to walk.  Hopefully the next week will finally be cardiac rehab.  Yea!

Can't seem to fix it here - breaks in the same spot each time.  But, Kathy was able to open both unbroken links OK.

I'm encouraged by the updates I've seen from some of the folks who've posted notes regarding medical issues - SNL/Don, Paul, Randy, Ada, James - but will continue my prayers for all of you, as well as 'Speedy', Alvin, Charles, and Odis' family.

Sandy - I'm all-in for the next mini, whenever/wherever you want to hold it - and El Fenix sure sounds like a great idea for dinner afterward - eh, Paul?

Randy - Whether you're able to make it to the next mini or not, I've been in touch with former classmate & Coast Guard buddy, David Hamm, who informed me that several SOC guys ('64, '65, '66) meet for lunch at the Oak Cliff El Fenix every month or so.  I asked him to let me know when they plan the next one & I'll pass the word here.

They just had one on 2/21 and posted some pix on FB, which I'm not on, but my wife, Kathy, is and she e-mailed copies.  I called David and he ID'd the guys as: (left side) John Parker '64, Gary Dagley '66 & Reid McKay (Zumwalt?); (right side) Dan Keller, Charles Brooks & Bill Harvey, all '65, & Mike Logan (yr?).

I can't post the pix w/o a URL, so here are 2 FB links from David's acct that I hope you'll be able to open.  If not, find David Hamm, scroll down to 2/21 & look for a cluster of 5 old guys mostly wearing ball caps:

Sad about Coach Norman. He was my neighbor when I was at SOC. And, he was best friends with my cousin's husband, Kenneth Brashear, basketball coach and science teacher at Adamson. He was a very nice man.

I want to let y'all know that Coach Bruce Norman passed away a week or so ago and I saw it on FB late Friday.  I've tried to  find an obit but no luck.  Here's the best I can do, I've put a link to the FB post by my friend Tanya and it's OK, it's safe.  I wanted you to know but this was all I could get.

He was such a good teacher and coach and I loved watching him & his wife dance across the floor at our reunions.  RIP Coach Norman, I hope you're dancing in heaven!

'66 Friends:

Several of us are already members of the Facebook Public Group, OAK CLIFF BOOMERS, and if you're not already consumed by computer time, the group fosters discussions about many old places and times in our old Oak Cliff:  restaurants, theaters, recreational venues, times and drive-ins and streets where we "cruised" and drag-raced, etc.  I find it interesting though the lists of brief comments can tend to go on and on, but no one needs to read everything.  Maybe some of you will find it interesting some of the time.

Glad to see we still have a sense of humor!  Randy, no not the Oak Cliff El Fenix.  We're talking about the one right up the road (Hwy 75) from where we have the Minis.  It's at Plano Pkwy & Hwy 75, right next to the Hooters, [wink] you can't miss it!

We have the Minis that run from 2 to 6 pm in a hotel bar area for a reason.  One important reason is so no one has to pay anything to attend.  Also, restaurants  aren't going to let 27 to 38 or so people roam around their restaurant and take up table space for 4 or more hours.  We've had lots of Minis at the Hyatt, the Double Tree and the Holiday Inn (where we had the B-day party) which are all very close to each other at 75 & Campbell.  Then when we leave around 6:00ish we just go a few blocks up 75 to Plano Pkwy and can be seated for dinner.

I really hope you get better soon as walking around with oxygen can be a bit tricky when you have a fireplace going.  [eek]

Don had a very good day Friday, 3-1. No pain what-so-ever.  He's still getting some minor little shocks but nothing to worry about.  I do believe the new meds are starting to work on that darn trigeminal nerve.  My thoughts and prayers for recovery are still being sent up on behalf of Paul, Randy, James, Ada Ann and Speedy.   God Bless our class of '66.

All of our friends facing health challenges are fully in my prayers.  I do care about all of us.  (I now regret staying away from our gatherings down through the years, but the 50th [and Rick Mitchell] brought me back.)  I think of you all often, and my '66 DEN stays near my sofa.

Now then.  When you mention "El Fenix" you really do mean the one in Oak Cliff on Colorado Blvd., right?  I mean, we actually COULD meet in Oak Cliff every few decades; it you haven't heard it's what's happenin' now, and the business generated here is doing well.  Property values have soared.

Again, prayers for all while my wife "helps me remember" to not get too close to the fireplace with my oxygen tubes in.
