Place: Richardson Comments: I don't usually like to jump into controversial issues but after talking to Jack the other night I believe this is worth sharing. I always heard & believed that if you had ever had Chickenpox the virus lived in your body forever and as you got older you were susceptible to getting Shingles. Since myself, Jack and, I would imagine, all of you were vaccinated as a child against Chickenpox then we shouldn't get Shingles. Right? Wrong! I have done a lot of research and reading about how & why we get Shingles. Here's what I never heard & it floored me. Back when we were all vaccinated, it was a live virus. It also lives in our bodies forever. Therefore, even if you didn't have Chickenpox because you were vaccinated against it as a child, you are still susceptible. That small round scar on your upper arm was the Chickenpox vaccine. That's why we are getting Shingles even though we didn't have Chickenpox. They now have a live and non-live vaccine. It also says anyone who has ever had Shingles is somewhat likely to get it again! Yes, I'm very concerned as I have a compromised immune system and I'm taking injections for two different issues. I've got to talk to my doctors because this Shingles issue is worrying me and it should all of you. That's my Public Information statement, the rest is up to you to research it and get the best info you can and make the best informed decision for yourself. Good Luck! This is the CDC's link and you can click on lots of links on the pg for more info. https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/hcp/vis/vis-statements/shingles.html
Place: Kerrville, Tx Comments: Gosh sorry to hear of everyone battling shingles. Bobby had them a couple of years ago so I know how painful they can be. Toni - bobby’s Dr told him he could get the new shingles shot even though he has had it once. I was told I cannot get it because I never had chicken pox. Cannot believe I did not have them when you did! lol Hope everyone feels better - and Happy Anniversary Don and Sandy.
Place: Sachse Comments: Well, Toni, I guess times change things. My doc told me to be sure and get the shot in about the November times frame to keep from having another bout. I plan on it, Not something I want to have again.
Place: KC, MO Comments: Good afternoon! For anyone who might not have seen this yet - There is a beautiful tribute to our classmate Faith Sorenson Lester and her work in Sierra Leone that has been posted on Facebook. There is no Share option for the post, but you should be able to see it if you go to Faith's page via the search bar on your Facebook newsfeed. SOC - and some mighty good families - produced some wonderful people! Everyone take care and keep your calendars open for our Fall mini! ...and Sandy, let us know if you need any help with the mini. Love to all - Carol
Place: Edmond Comments: I guess that means you can only put on a tile roof from then on, huh?
Place: Melissa USA Comments: And to clear up any unanswered questions, if you’ve have had shingles, you are no longer a candidate for the vaccine. I know that since 2006. Just saying...
Place: Edmond Comments: Jack, I pray you get through this quickly. I am sure it is tough. Hang in there. We have your back.
Place: Richardson Comments: Jack - I am so sorry to hear this!! I know it is painful & horrible. Will pray for a quick recovery my friend! Jack, Don does adjust the font, that's why it's so small. No one has to adjust the font for it to be readable. I have it set for readable font style & size. But, of course it can be adjusted if someone wants to add color, make it larger or change style. If you want to see what your message looks like, simple click on "preview" and yo can see what readers will see. Then you can adjust accordingly. I can hardly read his messages so sometimes I have to skip over them.
Place: Sachse Comments: Yes, Sandy, I don't need to ask about Shingles, I am dealing with them. Wouldn't wish them on anyone (well maybe AOC). Paul, continued prayers for you and Kathy and Speedy too. Don L, are you aware you can adjust your font size here? Your post make my readers strain. Or is that on purpose??
Place: Richardson Comments: Thanks for sharing Paul. Praying you both get some improvement & good results soon! Jack - Regarding your post, was that a silent way of telling us you or Glynda now have shingles??? I sure hope not, but you would be surprised at the number of people I actually know who have had Shingles. Ask Charles Moss about it!
Place: Edmond Comments: Have had my shot and a booster they recommended I get a few years after the first one. Don, Kathy has had quite a time of it post-surgery, not as a result of the surgery, but due to peripheral issues related to her gastro issues. Witnessing slow but discernible progress. I am in my break between chemo cycles which I pray will bring at least a few days of normalcy. I have cycles in July and August and then the ever-important bone marrow biopsy. I am trusting God will produce the numbers I need for a Sept or Oct stem cell transplant. Then it is two months of “house arrest” until my immune system starts building back from total destruction. Then another four months and I get all my baby shots, pneumonia shots and shingles shots (again). So a pretty fun ride for awhile. Thanks for asking about us.
Place: LV, TX Comments: Had my 1st Shingles shot several yrs ago. Due to vaccine shortage, at least down in our area, Baylor Scott & White advised us to try our pharmacy for the 2nd one, which they're calling Shingrix. I've been on a waiting list for several months, but coincidentally, Walgreens advised I can come in anytime today or tomorrow - will do!
Place: Sachse Comments: Hello Hope that got your attention cause I want you to read this. If you have not gotten you shingles vaccine DO IT NOW! Quit putting it off and go get it done. Shingles is not something you want to deal with. Medicare covers the cost. No excuses. Do it.
Place: LV, TX Comments: Hey Paul - Glad to hear your daughter and son-in-law were only 'shaken up' a bit while in the vicinity of the quake & after-shocks. They'll have some unexpected excitement to recall about their 10th anniversary celebration later on. So, how are you holding up phase/cycle-wise? You must be looking forward to a target date to wrap-up, recover and prep for that re-test, Also, hope Kathy's recovery was uneventful following gall bladder surgery. Damn, after re-reading this, it really sounds kinda nosey! So, just wondering how you & your wife are doing, in general, overall. Not trying to drag-out all your personal & medical details - just whatever you care to share.
Place: Edmond Comments: My daughter and son in law are driving through Cal to celebrate their 10th Anniv. They were at a restaurant in LA when it hit. Things were rocking and rolling but they are fine Praise God. |
