Place: Richardson Comments: Today, 8-31, is a big B-day for several of our Classmates. Happy B-day to Sammy Smith (both of them born on the same day!), Charles Moss, Janie Jones and Rusty Powers. Best wishes for another great year and many more!!
Place: Richardson Comments: Yes, I agree Don, even if we didn't know an old classmate personally . . . someone else did! I didn't know Mike, but you, Richard, Toni & others did know him. Let's all keep our ears open and if you learn of something about an old classmate, don't hesitate to share here because no one knew every person from our class. But thankfully, due to our many Minis, this site and FB, I've gotten to know many more than I ever imagined. And that's a good thing!
Place: LV, TX Comments: I don't want to close without acknowledging Tanya's & Sandy's earlier posts regarding Mike Merola's passing. He was one of our Air Force vets. I had only recently re-established contact with him and obtained his updated info. I'm glad Charles Goff and Charles Moss were in contact and passed the word. I'll also post a note for those on the SOC '66 Vets e-mail distro list. I knew Mike during our years at SOC and he was always a fun-loving, cut-up. The last time I recall seeing him at one of our reunions (not a recent one), he was behaving the same way out on the dance floor. I'll miss his spirit and am sorry we could not get together again. May God bless him.
Place: LV, TX Comments: Hi Gang - Sorry I missed some of your travel notes/tips for CO before leaving town, but appreciate them (Paul, Sandy, Vern & Carol). We saw more great sights than our photos could capture. Crossed the bridge over Royal Gorge, then took a train along Ark. River 1,000' below; took a 2nd train around Silver Plume Loop; stayed a few days w/LV group in large rental house, Estes Park; dinner at Stanley Hotel (clues: "Here's Johnny!", REDRUM); drove around Rocky Mtn Nat'l Park. Left Estes Park via Trail Ridge Rd. (took our time - very enjoyable), headed for CO Springs; took small tour bus to Pike's Peak (going up, no oxygen needed, but 'cool' temp became 'blowing snow' in less than 15 min; coming down, brakes ck'd w/heat sensor - OK); lastly, drove thru Garden of The Gods - wow!
Place: LV, TX Comments: H a p p y 49th A n n i v e r s a r y to Yuvonne Fox & Dale Smiley, today, Aug. 28th!
Place: Richardson Comments: You're right Paul - OKC isn't for wimps! My nephew, John, lived there for 3 years while he went to law school there. It was always something happening up there. His mom was nervous wreck the whole time. She couldn't wait for him to come back home. Hopefully in the near future your son will get his transfer back to DFW & you and Kathy can follow. Take care of yourself!
Place: Edmond Comments: Gotta be tough to live where the buffalo (and tornadoes) roam. 🌪😁. Temperature change is indeed wonderful.
Place: Raining in Richardson Comments: Paul - Very glad y'all are safe & it didn't hit your home! But too close for comfort! Those storms came down here, and even though we don't have the high winds/tornado, we got RAIN! Yea!! Yesterday it was 102 with heat index of 110 here. This morning early it's raining and a little wind with forecast highs of mid 80s. Wow, what a difference 10-12 hours makes in TX. Rain how now stopped but still hearing lots of thunder & seeing lightening.
Place: Edmond Comments: Just had a HEAVY storm. Tornado about 6 miles east of us. Monday fun in OKC.
Place: Sugar Land Comments: So sad another classmate passed away. I remember Mike Merola well. He had curly black hair and joked around a lot. So to hear he was a hermit, makes one wonder what happened in his life to take the spark away. Rest In Peace, Mike. Hope you are full of joy and laughter in heaven.
Place: Edmond Comments: I will be there in spirit. Think of me, especially when you are at El Fenix. 🌮🌮🌮
Place: Richardson Comments: When I posted Mike's name to our memory page I saw that he is the 100th person from our class we know of that has passed away. I have a gut feeling there are probably at least 15 or more on the Missing list that are also deceased but we don't know it. ![]() On a brighter note - I posted the Fall Mini info on the Events page this morning. I'll have to wait a bit to confirm the hotel, have to see who wants to negotiate & who doesn't. But date is set for Oct. 26th. Mark your calendars!
Place: Richardson Comments: Thank you Tanya for the info on Mike Merola. I guess his roots were still in Oak Cliff since the F.H was Laurel Land. We wouldn't have even know of his passing if it hadn't been for Charles Goff also living in Quitman & letting us know. I didn't know Mike, but I know many of you did. I went to Laurel Land to get the Obit link but it is only a one-liner. Charles said Mike was a hermit and despite many requests to have lunch he never accepted. It isn't much, but sometimes . . . that's all there is. https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/name/michael-merola-obituary?pid=193575519
Place: SOC 65 Comments: Mr.Michael Joseph Merola was born on October 2, 1948 and passed away on Thursday, August 1, 2019. Mr. Merola was a resident of Texas at the time of passing. This was his obituary listed at Laurel Land Funeral Home in Dallas. You can leave messages on their site. Hope this helps some.
Place: Calif. Comments: Well, that's too bad about Mike. I remember him pretty well. Always seemed like a good kid. I hope he had a great life. |
