Sam, what happened to Steve Cargill? Did he move to Samuel, H. Grady Spruce? I played one summer with him, great guy. I think I saw him in Jr. college, too many summers ago.

Jack, thanks for the memories, especially the summer of 1960. Man you said it all about our team and Coach Nichols. I'll never forget you, Speedy, Scooter Carroll, Steve Cargill. We had no doubt the best infileld in the city. Any of you guys seen the movie "The Sandlot"? That was us. Practiced in the heat for 2 hours on the Lisbon ball diamond and jumped the fence into that concrete pool. We had just as much fun on the away trips as well. I still don't see how the nine of us fit into Coach Nichol's pickup, but we did it.

People ask me what the best time of my life was and without hesitation, I tell them all the time we played ball at Lisbon.

Toni, Glendale was my favorite pool too.  I especially loved their concession stand.  They had good stuff  My favorite park was Kiest.  The Easter egg hunts, the fireworks, flying kites and  baseball.  Those were the days.  They all went by too quickly.

Anyone ever worked in 59 MPH Winds? I did today, and it was miserable. Cheezhead, the drives could have gone 450 yds.

Happy Ann. JWT and Joyce.

Happy Jack, thanks for taking my call, glad we both have the same sharp minds.

Played lots of softball at T.L. Marsalis before school each day. If you hit it over the chain link fence, you rolled up your short sleeve shirt and did the "I'm Chris Paul Cool" walk to class.

Jada, Karen and I left in 5th grade and went to TL Marsalis for 5th thru 7th, and then on to Zumwalt!  I remember the pool near JNB....I always remember the water being a murky green!  I remember the fun we had in the summer.  The Glendale pool was steppin' in high cotton compared to that little pool at JNB  My dad passed away in Feb. 1960, and that summer, Karen and I saw a man sitting on a beach towel inside the pool area....he looked just like my dad....we were really shocked by that experience....took us about a week before we'd go back.... but we couldn't miss out on all the adorable life guards...

I loved the stories of championships won on a ballfield in Oak Cliff long ago. I didn't exactly have the same competition experience as you guys did. I remember going to the park pool at Clara Oliver in the summer (also got my Duck badge there) and lining up for the swim competitions each time. We would dive in the deep end, swim the length of the pool, turn and swim back. Each race had the same outcome...I lost. There was one girl who was really good and won everytime. One day I wasn't going to race but at the last minute, I ran up to join in just as they blew the start whistle. I tripped, spun around and fell into the pool just as the others had dived in. When they made their way back to the finish line, I pretended I was racing back just ahead of them and put my arm on the finish wall just ahead of "the champ". I looked at the coach and he didn't say a word but just grinned. To this day, she still thinks I beat her. It was a great moment.

JWT, no need to be embarrassed, I always ran, ran, and ran!
Ada Ann, I think you are right about going to school at Cedar Crest, because they were finishing the school.  Did you live on Narbo, which was around the corner from Dugald?  I also remember you transferring later.
My memory of Lisbon swimming pool is not the best.  I sat on an asp  and I will never forget it
I know all my older cousins played ball there.

Dale, I just went to the store and they had canned irregular pears.  Yep, I thought of you when I read the label.

Wow!  this wind has caused quite a few fires!!

Toni, as I started my statement...If I remember...I think...but I was correct that you and Karen met at Bryan? I apologize about your hair color...because most of us were toe head white (I thought I always remembered you as a red head)...except Adrianne...she had the blackest hair I had ever seen...so you started in 2nd...I left in the 4th...Ada came in the 4th...but I remember Ada at the little city run pool on the same land as Bryan...much like the one that Jack described at Lisbon...Ada's mother and Mike Malone's (Zumwalt) Dad ran the park and I thought I remembered Ada from there...playing checkers horse shoes and softball. I have a picture from the 4th grade class before we moved to the farm down on Ledbetter...I'll see if I can find it and share.

Don L. yes I owe a picture...will try tonight and send to SNL so you can make fun of me again...LOL

Tillery, I didn't mean to embarrass you...I was as young and stupid as you...since I couldn't hit a curve ball I chose not to try and even play baseball...so I had no idea that the bases had any other meaning...is there something about a pitcher I should know?

Jack,
Thanks for sharing the memorable story. As a C of C child I was not allowed to swim at Glendale pool (mixed bathing you know) but could go to Lisbon Park. Earned my "Duck" award there. Don't ask. Watched Fernwood Baptist play lots of baseball right on that field. The O. C. Jets practiced there and when we messed up, coach would make us take a lap around that horse apple tree for punishment.... er I mean to build up our endurance. I'm with Sandy... this brings back way too many sentimental memories. Great time to be a kid.
