Memo to KMG: That was me on the operating table, dealing with the removal of a spreading skin cancer right over my heart using the Mohs surgical technique. 30 stitches to come out next Monday.

Finally, got some cell phone connection and the first incoming call today was from Dale & Yuvonne. They cut short their vacation and will arrive back in Conroe tomorrow. Their neighbor reported to them that a tree in the Smiley front yard had fallen on their house and somehow a watermain broke and was spewing water in the air. The situation is under control but awaits repair.

The damage to upper Houston, Spring, The Woodlands and Conroe is aggravating and inconvenient, but nothing like the devastation in Galveston, Kemah, Bolivar Point, Gilchrist, Crystal Beach and the like. Here is a link to the photos coming in:

The rest of had it easy. The other folks may never get over the effects of Ike.

It's so great to hear from JS & little "a" !!!!   I've tried many times to get thru to JS & Dru since Sat but never successful.  Those are great pics JS!  I was just wondering . . . on that 1st pic with you behind the tree, you are wearing something other than that shirt aren't you???!!!

We got good news on Tuesday.  Don's Mom's hse had no water damage and only suffered a downed fence & a few limbs from her trees!  Considering she lives in Pasadena & the eye passed over her house, very lucky!  She left before the storm & Don's bro went over Tue to ck it out for her  The electricity was even back on!!  She's coming home today

I'm happy to hear from more of our SOC friends and to know they are OK and have minimal damage.  I have a good story to tell you about our new house, but I gotta wait a little longer until it becomes funny.  Right now it's still in the "annoying" and "I can't believe it" mode!!  It should become funny in about another 24 hrs.     Later guys....

Hey little "a", We're so happy that you and Sid got through the storm. What a welcome back, huh? I'm glad to hear you got to see the Cowboy game. JS, those were some pretty eye opening photos of storm damage near you. What were the doctors removing/installing?

Greetings fellow SOCITES!
It's so great to be alive. Living through a disaster makes you truly appreciate the little things in life---like flushing toilets. Amazing. Truly amazing.
First, HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS!!!! God blessed us with electricity Monday evening so we could see a truly classic game. At every turn, I see the vast contrast between California and Texas. We got Longhorn football season tickets---what TRADITIONS we have--so wonderful to visit Austin again---feel the Texas love wash over you. To see how people pull together with Texas grit through this awful storm---let the world marvel at the top to bottom GET R DONE attitude, courtesy, and good humor---all straight from the heart. GOD BLESS TEXAS!

Oops, I mis-named the lambs ... they are Winchester & Remington.

I guess young Kendall (their owner) is headed for the NRA, along with the FFA.

Richard, I didn't find out til today about Monday's stock market meltdown. A drop of 504 points on the Dow Jones! I hate to see an old firm like Lehman bite the dust. Never would have believed it.

September hasn't been my month. Had minor surgery on Monday, Sept. 8th, came home and found my attic a/c unit had died. Set me back $2,250 in addition to the $4,000 we spent in May to replace the outside compressor. Then Ike rolls in - leaving me to change bandages on a 3" gash by candlelight with NO a/c. I miss a tremendous Cowboy game; and the stock market heads south.

I'm ready for October.

JS - Helluva photo line-up, man!  Glad you & yours were not crushed beneath an uprooted tree.  'Leaning Pines'?  Maybe 'Shallow' or 'Lazy' or 'Fallen' instead?

After all that & you had to endure missing what will probably be the best Cowboy game we've seen in ages - damn, that's cruel.

Again, glad you're safe.

I probably need to swing by Smiley Manor and see if its still standing.

We finally got electric power back today around 3:00pm! I never realized how dependent we are on the benefits of electricity. I couldn't watch tv, no air conditioning, no computer, no washing machine, no lights to eat, bathe, shave, or read by. No Cowboy game!

No electric tooth brushes. What did the pioneers do when their electric tooth brushes were rendered useless?

I've been in this region since 1976 and this is the worst weather we've been through. Fortunately, our home only suffered two small leaks in the ceiling. The winds really did a number on the trees this time around. They may rename The Woodlands as "Leaning Pines".

We did maintain water pressure throughout and could shower and flush toilets, although we were warned not to drink the water (especially from the toilet). Much of Houston wasn't so lucky.

Still no cell phone coverage or land line connections. Gasoline is VERY hard to come by. Ice is another rare commodity. The neighborhoods are filled with the sounds of generators and chain saws.

Last death count for Ike was 30 as of this afternoon. The cool front arrived just in time. Pics to follow.

Okay, okay, so I slept since the Smileys vacation was discussed. Jack, you of all people should know that everyday is a new day for me. I have to put sticky notes everywhere to remind me of stuff.

KMG, did you have your hair done recently?? Or was it too much Cowboy partying?? D & Y left for the northwest while Ike was still in Cuba.

I'm sure our new neighbors know by now what NFL team this household roots for!!!  Might have been the Cowboys' flags that fly along our sidewalk or the screaming after 10:00pm.  We liked joining in with the stadium crowd and making noise everytime McNabb came up to the line!  It was definitely a great MNF game to remember!

KMG - I think the Smileys were on vacation.  I think that's what I remember John Southworth saying.  Sure hope everything is ok when they return.  KMG, I thought I saw you running along side Wade Phillips a time or two!  I know my neighbors had to hear me cheering!  Cardiac Cowboys, indeed!  I bet #10 on the Eagles had to walk home!

Toni, thanks for letting us know about annette and Sid. That's great news. Has anyone heard from the Smileys or any other of the folks down South that haven't reported on this site yet?

GO COWBOYS!!! Like SNL and Don L, I was practically on that field playing with them and was totally exhausted but thrilled at the end. Good ole Cardiac Cowboys.

I am glad to see that I wasn't alone yelling for our "COWBOYS" and encouraging Demarcus to sack that quarterback. That was the showdown at "Texas Stadium" where we all had our "POPCORN POPPING" and watching T.O. catch up to Jerry Rice and his record. This was a game that everyone enjoyed

Don L - Great idea, let's see if we can figure out how to add that beautiful blue star to the list!!   The 'Boys went out in style on their last Monday Night game at Texas Stadium!  With all the scoring & memorable plays by many players, it will certainly be a great memory!!    Now - on to Green Bay.
