Comments: Jack, that article was from MAY--things don't change that fast! Wouldn't it be great if cities had enough low income housing built that fast. I know what you mean, though. Sometimes places can just turn bad-- but most people are not! it just takes a few bad ones to make the place dangerous.

Comments: Got the link to work. Thanks Sally. That is an old article. While it is hard to lie about being a woman, child or black, research has shown that about 1/2 those who claim to be veterans are lying. They do so hoping to get special care. I know this sounds funny, but I think the numbers increased because they opened a 24-7 shelter. People came from other areas because they can hang out there and not have to leave for the day as in most other places. You should go by there sometime and see the ones hanging around outside because they are not allowed in because they cause trouble. Using/selling drugs, fighting, refusing not to smoke are the most common problems. Anybody got a room for these folks??

The taxpayers have for many years provided housing and each and every time it has been turned into slums and ghettos by those living there. Dallas has just built and opened a multi-million dollar homeless shelter. It is overflowing. Suddenly there are more homeless people in Dallas than ever before. If you build it they will come. The city of Dallas recently built housing in different parts of town. One of these enclaves is near my neighborhood on the border with Carrollton. Crime, vandalism and graffiti are all up. Some of the local stores have closed because they lost so much money through shoplifting. Could be a coincidence, but doesn't seem likely. I repeat MOST of the homeless are there because that is where they want to be. I'm glad to teach somebody to fish so they can stay fed. But I'm tired of providing the fish everyday. Glad to offer a hand up, but no more hand outs. There are lots of organizations to help people but the one that does the worse job of it is the government. Most problems have an answer. Most often the answer is NOT throw money at it. More especially if it is taxpayer money.
