Comments: Sally, my assumption was that was a bogus email from the get-go....maybe it's real, I don't know. It just doesn't smack of a well-written piece of literature turned out by a Columbia University dept. head.
Comments: Hey there dear friend Sally! So great to hear from you. I think it is wonderful to hear all sides of these issues, and we are indeed a very lively literate bunch of folks. I lived the Middle East drama--I have many conflicting feelings about Palestine, and have dear Palestinian friends. However, there are some who want to kill my husband's family just because of his name and Christian religion. in 1975 we escaped the war in Lebanon, our little family, weeks before armed men came to our apartment that we sub-let to Muslim friends. Our friends reported they were searching the apartment and were coming to kill us. During that period, Christians homes were entered, the women raped and killed, the children killed, and the husbands were kidnapped, killed and buried in mass graves. This is well documented in history books of the period. I have a hard time having warm feelings about people ask for genocide. I'm not sure what Mr. Khalidi thinks, but I believe that we should be able to hear and see for ourselves.
Comments: Come on, Sally. Khalidi was the spokesman for the PLO when they were a terrorist group (like they aren't now). There is no law against having an opinion. But most people don't voice the opinion to wipe a country and it's people off the face of the earth. And if they do, reasonable people distance themselves from them forever. Used to they got run out of town on a rail. I guess Bill Ayres just like to play with firecrackers too and he dropped them in the wrong places!
Comments: A little addition to Col. John Ripley's obit. He was a Quad Body member. He went through four of the toughest military training programs in the world: The Army Rangers, Marine reconnaissance, Army Airborne and Britain's Royal Marines. He was the ONLY Marine to be inducted in the U.S. Army Ranger Hall of Fame. He earned the Navy Cross and a Silver Star for his service in Viet Nam. He wrote the book "The Bridge at Dong Ha" which details the battle mentioned earlier. This took place in 1972 when most of us were back home. He and 600 South Vietnamese regulars were ordered to hold and die against 20,000 North Vietnamese Regulars and 200 tanks. His action stopped the enemy advance. Glad he was on our side. Fugate; thanks for sharing a great story/piece of news. Do y'all think this reemergence of gratitude and honor is backlash from the way our troops were treated upon return??
Comments: Annette et al,Hi Annette, I know Sid Jackson-- To me it looks like he was just sending an e-mail to a friend and someone got into e-mail illegally. he had no more to do with the tape of Obama in Chicago than you do! It was a really odd thing to print on that site. And, for the record, Rashid Khalidi just has some opinions about Israel that many others have and many others disagree with. No one has found that it is illegal to have these opinions. And, I guess he talked to the PLO but that is not illegal either. One other thing, although Columbia's department of middle east languages and cultures is made up of people from many different places, religions and cultures, they seem to all get along --but outsiders like to come in and create havoc, call names, and look for any little thing they can to stir up anti-Palestinian fervor. There have been a few scandals of this sort--of people trying to besmirch the reputations of some of the professors in that department. Not good sportsmanship at all to print lies. Somehow many people believe it even if it is not true-- a very sad situation.
Comments: My Dad is 85 and a WWll Vet, he was in the US Navy for 6 yrs. He is in a nursing home here in Richardson and there are quite a few other WWll Vets there also. They can't answer questions but they remember being in the war and what branch they were in!! Soon they will all be gone and it will be up to us to make sure our kids, grand kids and the world doesn't forget what they did. Also the horrors of the atomic bomb, Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima and all the other very significant and historical events that gave us the freedom we enjoy today!!
Comments: Donnie, Great story. We report 3 to 4 deaths a month for WWII Vets even in our small county. What's frightening is the fact that while they are about gone, the number of deaths of VNam Vets is increasing. When I took this office, the Texas Veterans Commission stated that we lost 1400-1500 Vets per day in the US. That had increased to about 1800-1900 per day last year. As the WWII Vet population decreases that number should taper off some.
Comments: RW -- If I were you . . . I'd stop talking. I think that hole is getting deeper!! ![]() Thanks for warning them Richard - - But I think some of you have come within less than 100 ft!! Yikes! Let's not keep our feelings hidden by all means. Tell it like it is!! ![]() Thank goodness this will all be over by sunrise!!! ![]()
Comments: KMG, if you tell Mike what I said, he will send me a Christmas card. But i want you to know I'm sorry, what can I do to regain your favor. I know, you looked pretty good for a matronly Aunt. SNL what do you think, she shouldn't be mad after such a flattering comment. On second thought, please disregard this post.
Comments: tied to a chair with duck tape on the mouth. pushed in a dark closet in the basement. envelop please-where is the Rev Wright when we need him the most
Comments: Dennis, you picked up on the same thing I did in that obit...the notion of this guy not getting the recognition he was due way back when. We are definitely the generation of "Rodney Dangerfields" when it comes to vets....no respect. That's a good WWII story there DWF...those guys get all the respect...and should. I shared a cab a couple of years ago in Washington DC with the President of the Survivors of the USS Indianapolis (sharks ate all the rest after they delivered the A-bomb)...I got out at his stop to shake his hand...these ol' fella's are going fast. ...and Norman, talk about no respect...that's the ultimate.
Comments: Was at Love Field about 6:30am to catch a plane back to ABQ. As I came thru security checkpoint, there was a police honor guard at gate 1. When i asked what the occassion was, I was told that a group of WWII veteran were to fly out to DC for the dedication of the WWII memorial. In a short while, a group of WWII Vets(approx 50) came towards the gate. The whole gate area erupted in applause for these great heros. Their faces lit up as they entered the area and It was a really moving sight.
Comments: Richard, Thanks for that story on Colonel Ripley you have to admire someone with that kind of fortitude and dedication. Its always good to see that the Viet Nam Vet is now getting the recognition for the price that was paid.
Comments: Okay Mr. Smarty Pants Rick, I'll have you know that Mike graduated in 1967 which is only one year behind us. Thanks for telling me I look like his matronly aunt!
Comments: I can't believe it, I thought I lived in a nice area but someone ran over and destroyed my McCain yard sign. LOL. anyone else have this happen ? robert ![]() |
