Toni, I just read your post, it is funny but sad.(I love the Vik comment)  As I was looking at DISD history, most of the new school have been named after Hispanics, but they also make up the majority and have since early or mid 2000.  No money for new schools, so this maybe the first of many.

Happy birthday Rosemary!  Hope it's been the best on yet.

Don and Doc, take it easy and don't try to rush the rehab.  Good to hear you are both doing good.

Lisbon School District was annexed by Dallas in 1928, 83 years ago.  At that time there were 12 schools in Lisbon District.  Still have not found when the school actually opened.
SJM, Hinojosa is what I was thinking or the "lady" that was fired (can't remember her name) Hawkins Elementary, doesn't sound bad, without the "D" word.

Has anybody ever turned on a blender and forgot to put the top on it?  My hair smells of berries and yogurt,...not too bad.

Happy, happy birthday Rosemary...wherever you are!!  Hope you are having a great birthday celebration.

Sad Jack....here's the scoop....Sarah Zumwalt was one of my mother's teachers at O. M. Roberts Elementary School, on E. Grand Avenue, in Dallas, Texas, somewhere around 1919 or 1920!!!

It is sad to hear about DISD changing the name of Lisbon.  Does anyone know if Mr. Holland was black?  My guess is that he was or is!  The next thing you know, they will be naming John Neely Bryan Elementary - my guess is John Wiley Price Elementary!!!!!  They would have to lend his name to an elementary school for the obvious reason!  Then, perhaps Sarah Zumwalt will become Robert Medrano Middle School....get the picture???  T. L. Marsalis could possibly be renamed Michel Vick Elementary to go with his key to the city!   It goes with the territory!  Sad but true!

Dave 'Mystic' Doc - I know it's early (still is for me), but how are you doing since back surgery?  If pain meds aren't helping much during recovery, might ask your Dr if Prednisone is worth a try.  It goes after nerve swelling & inflammation causing residual pain.  I started a 6-day decreasing dose pack day before yesterday & it seems to be helping a bit.

Lisbon was also where I started 1st grade, until some of us were transferred to Oliver around mid year.  What a shameful & brainless idea to rename a historical landmark such that it totally loses its identity.  Why not call it SOC Elementary instead?  Or, better yet, just leave it the hell alone!

The 1st PT session for my back was a breeze yesterday.  Just the usual initial interview & physical exam, followed by lying on my back with a heating pad & electrical stimulation underneath.  But, the homework exercises look to be a bit more challenging & that's where I'm heading shortly - after one more post, to follow shortly.

SNL, it's over 80 yrs old.  My aunt who is 92 went there as well as my mom and uncle.  Are they going to change the name of Lisbon Cemetery?  My family has continued to supply the funds for the up keep of Lisbon Cemetery.  Get the petition started.

When I posted the news abt Lisbon I had just heard it on the Noon news Tue,2-15. It made me so angry my stomach started hurting.  I wonder if the people on the Sch Bd that made this decision even know for whom/what Lisbon was name?? It was for the small town of Lisbon!!!  We shd petition the Sch Bd to change it back & name one of the new schs after Mr. Holland.  Then have Lisbon sch declared a historical landmark, as it is well over 60 yrs old & the town no longer exists. It was taken over & incorporated by Dallas.

When new schools, roads, parks, buildings, etc are built, name them after more current heroes or DISD teachers, but DON"T start changing our longtime existing names or we will lose the identity of those who worked so hard to build Dallas & this country!   Think about it . . .  many of our streets, frwys & buildings are named after iconic people.  Off the top of my head... LBJ Frwy, Stemmons, RL Thornton, GWBush Turnpike, Woodall Rogers, etc.   Oh, and here's a question. What the heck does it mean when they keep saying the name was changed to "H.I. Holland at Lisbon".   ????????

Jack, Schools are usually named or in this case renamed for a role model in the community. I am sure Mr. Holland reflects the ethnic diversity of the Lisbon community. I agree with you I think it would have been better to have chosen a new school to name after Mr. Holland, although his son is the current principal at Lisbon. If you want to complain you might contact your school board member. If you don't know a school board member, I would suggest Bruce Parrott. He is our representative and he works hard to represent our community.

As SNL noted earlier, DISD has changed the name of Lisbon elementary school to Herman I. Holland elementary at Lisbon. Mr. Holland is said to be a long time teacher and coach in the DISD. I have no doubt that Mr. Holland is/was a fine man, teacher and coach. I don't know if he ever taught at Lisbon. I think it would have been better to name a new school after him. Lisbon school has been there and been Lisbon Elementary for a long time. My Mother went to school there. I think it is a terrible thing to do to the community. A new name won't mean a thing to the kids that go there. How many people ever heard or know anything about Sarah Zumwalt?? Who the heck was Boude Story?? Can changing the name South Oak Cliff High School be far behind?? Does every school have to be named after somebody?? Is community pride so easily dismissed? Yes, I know I'm tilling at windmills, but this really galls me. No discussion, just do it. So much for history and community.

Doc, great news about your successful surgery. Hope you are quickly back to even better than before. And pay no attention to that "also ran" DWS. He's still licking his wounds from his spelling "malfuncton" way back in grade school.

JD, try typing LOL in lower case letters next time to avoid waking Kathy.
