Place: Update on Smokey Kimbrough

Comments:
Larry Dunn & his wife went to visit Smokey today and he was kind enough to send us this update.

"Linda and I had a great visit with Smokey and his daughter Melissa.  Smokey looked good, but his attempt at verbal communication was difficult.

Next step is a rehab hospital--hopefully TIRR in Houston--world renown!

A long road ahead, but we were impressed with his progress!"

Thanks for the update on Smokey. I'm sure it's going to be a long road to recovery for him, but at least he is improving.

Yes, Dale, your error did not escape my notice. You might try some ginkgo biloba to help with that memory recall problem that you still have in regards to the actual winner of that long ago Spelling Bee.

Recvd an em from Larry Dunn with update on Smokey.  Below is the em in its entirety. Prayers still needed for our friend!

Talked to Smokey's daughter Melissa again today.  Smokey is doing better.  No ventilator now, has broken arm, broken clavicle, broken ribs, and of course the severe head trauma.  He is sometimes aware but can't talk, as he has a trach and a feeding tube.  The family wants to move him to Memorial Herman Houston, not sure when.  In the meantime, he may be moved across the street to a different unit.

He can receive get well cards from the St. Joseph Bryan website.  Linda and I plan to visit him on Monday.  Keep the prayers going.  Should know more after our visit.

Smiley,
Did the coyote do the Democrat dance? You know. One step forward, two steps backward and one step to the side to avoid the trap?

We use those mini-bear traps and it had chewed two of its' legs off and was still caught in the trap.

OK Dale, I'll ask . . . How did you know it was a Democrat coyote?

Put out more traps Dale, you need to thin the population of both.

Speaking of pests, what is the difference between a coyote and a flea?

One howls on the prairie and the other prowls on the hairy.

Caught a Democrat coyote in my trap last night.

Sam, we have coyotes here.  All around our neighborhood!!  So far they have killed one rabbit & one cat in our front yard!  Happened over night, we found the remains next mrng.  Also, in case you missed it . . .  last July our cat, Tiger, was out in his backyard at 5:30am.  During the summer he loves to go out before sun up & stays in the bkyd.  We have a secure 8' 4" wooden fence with a security netting Don put up around the top that extends from the top of the fence inward about 18".  The coyote jumped the fence, cleared the netting and attacked Tiger!  We awoke at 5:30am to our tree ring stones being pushed around and strange noises.  I had gotten up a bit earlier & let him out.  I told Don it must be a cat fight & he jumped up opened our bedroom door & yelled for it to stop.  He then said I saw something running and it wasn't a cat!  We both (like idiots) run out in our yard in our PJs and don sees something trying to jump and get out.  He thinks it's a dog.  Don doesn't have his glasses on & I'm seeing "it" desperately jumping trying to get out but "it" doesn't have enough running run to make the leap and the netting is keeping "it" in. "It" began running around the yard and slamming into the fence.  Don yelled, "Open the gate so it can get out!".  Iran over & opened the gate and It ran passed me & out.  It looked in the early mrng darkness to be a mid-sized German Sheppard.

Then the real horror set in, where was Tiger!?  We have 3-4 shrubs next to the fence and he likes to hide in them, so we pulled them back & there he was laying down panting desperately.  We brought him in and he was panting so hard his tongue was hanging out and I could see several abrasions on him.  Panicked we rushed him to the Emergency Room Animal place.  They were able to give him oxygen & clean and his wounds.  Keep in mind, my Tiger cat is 20 lbs & has all his claws.  Vet said they found blood on him but it wasn't Tiger's blood!!  He put up a good fight and we found about 8-9 of the big heavy stones pushed over where they must have been fighting. They were actually on the patio when Don yanked open the door.  One week later the City of Richardson put out a Em regarding Coyote attacks and a photo of what to look for.  Much to our surprise it looked exactly like what was in our bkyd.  I always thought coyotes were mangy skinny animals.  Wrong! Our neighborhood has lost several cats & dogs in the past few yrs.  And no, Tiger doesn't go out before it's light and we are up.  He is an indoor cat with bkyd privileges that's lucky to be alive!  Because of his size & strength he was able to fight off the coyote until Don opened the door & scared it off of Tiger.

Moral to this long boring story . . . I'll take the pesky squirrels any day instead of the big fence jumping coyotes!!  We still laugh about the fact we were out there with very little on, barefoot & Don blind trying to get a coyote out of our bkyd!

They are the reason I carry a 22 when camping and hunting. When fishing I eat fish, dumplings are a given.

I suggest you have your chef prepare squirrel and dumplings. A good time will be had by all.
