Place: Kerrville Comments: Thanks for the work SNL. I know how difficult it is. I help with all that for several organizations and it is extremely difficult to get them to work in your guidelines. I don't envy you.
Place: garland Comments: Thanks Sandy for a ll your hard work on this.
Place: Richardson Comments: Update Regarding 50th Reunion - - - Don't want you to think nothing is happening, there's plenty going on! I've met with 3 hotels (not all on the same day) and gave them each printed sheet with our basics needs listed. We discussed, took a look around the facilities and then they said they would get back to me. Although, one didn't even want to negotiate and shoved the price list in front of me and said to pick from the listed menu & let her know! The other wasted 2 1/2 wks of my time by not getting back to me despite my many pho calls and emails! Told me she could work within our budget but when finally got proposal it was nothing like we had discussed! Only way we could go with 2nd hotel is if we charged at least $38 for Fri & $65 or so for Sat. Same with the 1st hotel that wouldn't engage in any price discussion. I don't want to pay that much ea night for our Reunion & I'm sure y'all don't either!!!!!I was finally able to arrange meeting at 3rd hotel and they remind me of Double Tree back for our 45th. Nice, willing to discuss/negotiate and trying to find a way to get me what I want within our budget. I should know by Monday if she was able to get the price down to what we can afford. If you're wondering why this time around is different than the last 2 reunions, here's why. In 2006 (40th) we were in a terrible recession and hotels were hurting for business. Therefore, they were willing to negotiate on most everything. In 2011 (45th) were coming out of the recession but business at hotels was still a bit slow to return, still got a good deal. Now, in 2015, business is booming at hotels with more corporate /leisure travel and lots of business meetings being booked! Not good for a Reunion that doesn't have 25K or more to spend for a 2-night event. But, I'm not giving up. I still want a 2-night event because many classmates will be traveling great distances to be at this one. I don't want them to arrive Sat & have 4-5 hrs and then it's over! I feel like I'm butting my head against a corporate wall and quiet frankly . . . I have a headache! But, as most of you know, I don't give up easily. I have a good feeling about this 3rd hotel and some of you are probably going to say, "It's where?", but being off the beaten path of the hot Dallas/Richardson/Plano/Allen corridor is the only way I can get us a nice place that is big enough, food for both nights, great rate on nice rooms and with lots of eateries and other things literally within walking distance of the front door. Oh and it's 1 block off a major freeway so not hard at all to find from Love or DFW. But do understand, to book any hotel, you must sign a binding contract guaranteeing a minimum # of rooms and a minimum amount for food and beverage service. When I say You, I'm talking about Me. I have to make sure we will have enough people attend to fulfill those obligations. It was sure much easier when the economy was bad, but I will prevail, just a bit more difficult than in the past. Now I know why 2 of the previous classes had only One Night and it costs so much! I will post Date just as soon as the ink dries on my signature on the contract!!
Place: Richardson Comments: Glad you made it up to Austin & back today, kinda scary out there ! But you're right, the Horns are on an upswing! Tonight I made our first batch of cornbread for the season. Yuummm, it was so good. Felt like a cool snap came thru and hot cornbread with baby back ribs and salad hit the spot.
Place: The Woodlands Comments: We got back from the UT game in Austin. Thanks goodness. There were several cars in accidents along the way home. We are really nutty fanatic fans going into the storm! Can't believe how much the Horns have improved. Guess beating OU gave them a big jolt of confidence! Hope everyone is safe from this big storm.
Place: Richardson Comments: I remember getting the day off & that bus token to go to the Fair during the week. I was in the 7th grade when my mom let me go by myself with a girlfriend. We caught the Lancaster bus too, only in front of Autry's convenience store rather than on up Lancaster at Lisbon. We were so excited to be going by ourselves! But we had to be home by 6:00 which was when mom got home from work. One of the best days ever!! Seems we are either in a drought or it's flooding. Hope none of you got water in your homes and no one was stranded. Heard both I45 and I35 were shut down in different places last night due to high water over the hwy! Our rain gage showed almost 9 inches this morning!! Never seen that much rain in such a short period of time.
Place: Lake Tawakoni Comments: You guys remember getting a round trip bus token and coupon to get into the Fair? I got on the bus at the Lisbon Theater on Lancaster road and spent all day. I saved some of my paper route ( Dallas Times Herald ) money to spend on the Midway. What a good time that was. Five dollars got me food, drinks and games for the day. Fond memories.
Place: Oregun Comments: I loved going to the Texas State Fair, they really know what a fair is all about. Our Lane Country Fair used to be great but several years ago they decided the purpose of the fair was to make money. They kicked out all food vendors who had not made enough money in years past and raised the prices for a booth. Now there are maybe 1/2 of the displays, mostly local food vendors and also raised the cost of admission. The food now is the same stuff we can buy locally every day. That was one thing I really enjoyed, being able to try food that wasn't Wendy's or McDonald's. We used to take the Grandsons but even they decided they would rather spend a week on the Oregon coast in stead of going to the fair. That says something when kids don't want to go.
Place: Richardson Comments: Don & I went to the Fair on Saturday. The weather was beautiful and we had a great time. Walked in the gates at 10am and out at 4pm. First time we had been on a Saturday . . . and now I remember why! It was really crowded by noon but we still enjoyed it. With the entire run of 24 days, there was not a drop of rain. Fair broke all records!
Place: Richardson Comments: Yes Rod, I am so worn out from the 5 Game Series, feel like I've spent 5 days with the G-kids! As if the 2nd game where it took 14 innings to beat them wasn't tiring enough . . . then came the unruly, unbelievable, unique game 5. ![]() Yes, I'm still in mourning. But . . . Come early March, it's a new season!!!
Place: oregun Comments: Rick, 4 days camping with our two Grandsons tires us out, glad you were able to last 8 days. So is all of Texas in mourning for the Rangers, no one has posted since they lost. I was rooting for them, maybe I jinxed them. Hope all are doing well __ ROD
Place: Richardson Comments: Rick - You win the award for stamina! 8 days at Disney World with the G-kids . . . not sure I could have lasted 8 days! Glad you're back and hopefully giving your feet a rest.
Place: Disney World Comments: Just got back from eight days at Disney World. I went to all the parks and Downtown Disney too. I left my footprints all over Florida. The Gkids ran me ragged. I had to relax in the hotel pool each evening. What a fantastic place it is.
Place: Oregun Comments: I remember some great Texas/OU weekends, the games and the city wide party. Texas was the only good thing all weekend, rangers, Cowboys, the Titan, Oregon and Oregon State all lost, pretty dismal sports weekend. Hope for better the rest of the season. Hope all are doing well __ ROD
Place: Richardson Comments: Don got to go to the TX/OU game and said it was great! Lots of good vibes in the Cotton Bowl. The Longhorns were the only good sports show in town this weekend. Cowboys lost . . . badly and our Rangers just couldn't seem to get the bats going. They lost Game 3. We were worn out by the time both games were over. But, today is Game 4 for the Rangers!!! We can wrap it up with a win. First pitch 3:07pm on FS1. Go Rangers!!! |
