Place: Richardson Comments: Many of you always ask if there’s anything you can do to help with the reunion. As a matter of fact, there is. Barbara and I would like you to bring an empty box wrapped in Gold paper to the Mini. Weird . . . not really. They will be used as part of our 50th Reunion decorations! Make sure you wrap it in some type of Gold wrapping paper. Any kind, gold & white stripped, solid gold, glitter gold, gold and white polka dots . . . you get the idea. The largest size should be no larger than about 7 inches by 7 inches and the smallest no smaller than about 4 inches by 4 inches. They can be any combination in between. We need about 26 or so each of the large, medium and small sizes. In looking around for empty boxes I’ve found the ones protein bars, breakfast bars, Belvita cookies, etc come in are good medium to large boxes. The box our Quicken software came in is a perfect size. Also the boxes individual bars of soap and checkbooks come in are great for the small size. Use your imagination and start saving boxes. Please bring as many as you can to the April 9th Mini. It will be appreciated and you will have made a great contribution to the 50th décor. It’s OK to use ribbon, but don’t put bows on them as they will be stacked. So come on girls and guys, wrap a few boxes and bring them to the Mini. P.S. I have no idea what the heck they've done to our GB. If you go to make a post don't worry about all the "extra" stuff, just type your comments and it works. I'll contact them now.
Place: DeSoto Comments: Boy have I been in the dark about the goings on in DISD, enjoyed the history of C.P.Russell. I remember a lady the sold candy and such out of her converted garage I think about a block from the school. Went by the school last spring just to see what it looked like, sad really sad. I remember the "toilet bomb" with parts flying and every one hitting the door at the same time and I had just lit my cigarette!!! (bad habit I dropped 38 years ago) I'm not sure we'll make the reunion as we're planing a trip about the same time but will try.
Place: Mini Date is 4-9-16 Comments: JS - That was interesting about the history of Clinton P. Russell. I'm surprised it didn't have a name change in 1951. How would J. Southworth Elementary sound? Everyone take note that our next Mini will be held April 9th at the Hyatt - Richardson. All the details are listed on our Events pg.
Place: The Woodlands, TX Comments: Richard's earlier comment about Clinton P. Russell piqued my interest. So let us examine Clinton P. Russell, the Man. He was born in 1871 and arrived in Dallas in 1897 as the General Manager & Secretary-Treas. of the Postal Telegraph & Cable Co. (an early provider of telephone service). By 1902 he'd left their employment and formed his own company specializing in mortgages and bonds. Soon he was quite active in Dallas real estate transactions and was frequently reported in activities of the high society group. His business dealings grew and by 1914 he was elected to the Board of Education. He had a son and a daughter who both graduated from North Dallas High School which opened in 1922 (as Richard reported). By 1924 Russell was President of the Board of Education and that was his last year of service in that role. I speculate that his departure may have been due to declining health. In December, 1925 Russell died, leaving an estate of $250,000 (a sizeable amount for the times). Almost immediately the school board chose to honor him by renaming North Dallas High School as Clinton P. Russell High School. Although North Dallas High was only 3 yrs. in existence, it had a vocal and loyal following who fiercely objected to the name change. Within a week the school board folded and reinstituted the original school name. In 1930 the Board of Education honored Mr. Russell by naming an Oak Cliff elementary school after him. In 1951 that school gained a small degree of fame when I enrolled from the First thru Sixth grades.

Place: Richardson Comments: Sammy - I liked Mr.Pilkington and I also Liked Mr. Kelsay. I think I have a photo from maybe our 20th of me, Linda Wright, Darlene Moree & Mr. Kelsay. I'm going ot try and find it. Gee, speaking of teachers, I sure hope we have a few that are still able to attend our 50th. I'm in the process of trying to confirm April 9th as the date for our Mini. I started asking Tuesday . . . and I'm still waiting for a answer. Apparently 2 calls and an email haven't got me an answer. Hopefully tomorrow. As soon as they confirm it's Ok I'll post here and on the Events page.
Place: Lake Tawakoni Comments: Mr.Pilkington, Lisbon Elementary School Principal, was an avid paddle boarder. I'll never forget "Old Spanky" a large paddle with bored holes in it. He told us to grab our ankles and said "Gentlemen, the Board of Education will now be applied to the Seat Of Knowledge". Made a believer out of me; however, what made it worse was when I got home, daddy had already been called by Pilkington. I felt like calling my butt "Old Glory". Saw Stars and Stripes. I still don't know if my rock throwing days were justified.
Place: Richardson Comments: Are you sure you don't mean "paddle-boarded"?
Place: Calif. Comments: I was water-boarded for info. Wasn't so bad.
Place: 66erville Comments: I forget what period that took place, but I had study hall and most often got released to the ROTC room. Tillery had lost a contact and he and I were looking for it when the boom went off. Needless to say, since we were not "accounted for", I was called to the office later that day. Don't know if Tillery was or not, but think he was. I was questioned, sat in the office and questioned again. Glad I didn't know anything about it, but I still don't think I was believed. Jolly Frank gave me hard looks the rest of the year.
Place: rat chere Comments: The only thing I remember doing wrong was one time I kept a library book out two days longer than I was supposed to. I felt so bad.
Place: Melissa USA Comments: Love reading these old stories. In today's world, the whole lot of you would go directly to jail without passing "go" or collecting "$200"! Back in the day our mischief was referred to as "innocent fun" but was it really? Probably because no one had ever tried that particular form of mischief!!
Place: Lazy S Ranch Comments: Richard, funny thing, that was the only time Yuvonne was called to the office also and luckily when they sent for her we had not had time to discuss what happened and she was honestly in the dark about the occurrence. SNL, we knew about the pig event being planned and 3 of us drove around Lancaster for 2 nights but could not locate a single pig that looked prime for the borrowing. I guess you could say we were innocent but not for the lack of effort. About 3 weeks later we did manage to turn a few chickens loose in the hall after first period but it was a small event compared to the pig deal.
Place: Calif. Comments: Not to worry Dale; the statute of limitations has expired. By the way, the only time I was ever called to the principal's office was that event. The office was very careful and quiet about calling me in because the FBI had already visited them about my employment application which was going well, and they didn't want to mess it up (thoughtful folks). My name had come up as a possible "witness" which I wasn't.
Place: Richardson Comments: As well you should have been scared! If that happened today you would be suspended from school for the rest of the year and sent to an "alternative" school for bad boys & girls! Bobby is lucky he didn't get hit by flying toilet parts! Good thing y'all were fast runners! So were you involved in the "pig" incident, or was that strictly David Munden & Jim Stoehr?? Usually when something happened at SOC you were no where to be found and always claimed your innocence! Go ahead and fess up, I promise not to tell anyone. |
