Place: Richmond Comments: I am just now getting to the point of having access to my office and time to share some information. Thanks to all that sent prayers and good wishes our way. Fortunately none of my extended family was directly affected by water. Several of us were basically captive in our houses for 4 to 5 days since there was so much water everywhere. We were finally able to get around a little over the weekend. Our prayers go out for all those who did suffer from the flooding, especially for those with water in their houses. According to some reports I have heard that several areas around town may have water in the houses for two to three weeks. I think we were spared because the rain ceased on Sat upstream from us(College Station, Brenham and Hempstead). Our rain run off flows primarily to the Brazos River which dumps into the Gulf at Freeport. Those areas feed directly into the Brazos River which was our major concern. Others were affected by Buffalo Bayou, White Oak Bayou and Cypress and Spring Creeks as well as the Trinity and San Jacinto Rivers. Those sources all flow toward Galveston and Trinity Bays on the east side of Houston. There was so much rain it was unbelievable. The rain was so widespread that all were affected as has never happened before. As I told Jack and saw that he posted here, we received at least 52 1/4 inches of rain from Fri through Mon. I hope to never see that much in such a short period ever again. It was also good to read that most SOCites in the ares were spared the water. However for those that did not our hearts and prayers go with them.
Place: Richardson Comments: Ladies - thanks for the input. Yes - I'm kind of partial to the last of October (10-28) myself. It gives us/me more time. Executive decision, let's shoot for Oct. 28th for our next Get-Together! I will call Hyatt & see if they have any big event for that day. If so, I'll fall back to the Double Tree across the street. As far our 70th B-day Party, I haven't got anything in place yet. Just got the idea and some interest in having one a week or so before Harvey hit. I'll admit, with Don down there with his Mom in Pasadena and all his relatives and many of our friends all in Houston and the surrounding areas, I was glued to the TV & my phone all week. I didn't do much else. I'll need to do some checking at several places to find something appropriate. I learned by watching several other classes try to pull off a 60th and a 70th Party only to have low attendance and end up in the hole because the costs exceeded the income! It has to be low key and not too costly so everyone can attend without a big expense and if we don't get a big turnout we aren't out lots of money. I'll start calling about our Get-together and a place for our 70th and see what I can find. Will give an update as soon as I get some info. Thanks so much for the interest in both events!
Place: North Richland Hills, TX Comments: Any of those dates are alright with me, Sandy.
Place: NH Comments: Will the 70th birthday party be in the Spring?
Place: KC, MO Comments: I vote for the end of October, as I can't make it for either of the other dates. Of course, I can't expect you all to plan around my schedule - or can I? ![]() Love to all - Carol
Place: Get-Together Questions! Comments: Ronney - Thanks for reminding me about a Get-Together! With the boys here for a week then the next week Harvey hitting, I've not even thought about it. Sorry! The '67 50th reunion is the weekend of Sept. 23 & 24, so can't have it then. Several of our '66ers (including me) will be attending, plus some of our gang are married to someone from '67. How about any of these dates: Saturday, 9-30, October 14 or October 28?? Any of those look good for y'all. I'll check out the Hyatt at Campbell & Hwy 75.
Place: Allen, TX Comments: Sandy, Are we having a get together this fall? Just wondering. I haven't seen anything of GB, but I might have missed it.
Place: Sachse Comments: Bobby is going to have his gallbladder removed on Tuesday morning in Rockwell. His Dr kind of reminded me of my knee dr. She walked in wearing scrubs and cowboy boots. Do not care what she wears as long as she is good. If BD is feeling ok we will probably go home Thursday. I usually drive so he can kick back and relax! Thought this would basically be a nice relaxing trip up here for the surgery but my brother-in-law had emergency appendectomy Friday. He went home from the hospital yesterday. Hope everyone is still staying dry. A lot of the guys that worked for Bobby are in the Houston/Beaumont area. Keeping everyone in that area in our prayers.
Place: Richardson Comments: Good to hear the Tillery Clan are still safe & dry. It's hard to comprehend what 50 plus inches of rain in a few days would be like. I know a couple of yrs ago we got 5 plus inches in 24 hrs and that was an overload. I can't imagine how all the people who lost everything will recovery, it's mind boggling. I hope Larry was abl eto get a rent car by today so they can get their dtr, son-n-law and G-dtr and get into that home that was offered to them. At least they can all be together as they work thru this.
Place: Sachse Comments: Just spoke with Tillery. He and all his family are still high and dry. The total out of his rain gauge is 52 1/4 inches and he knows it over flowed during two nights. He said that they got as much rain in three days as they normally get in a year. He said that the water has started to recede except in the area of the two reservoirs where they have to keep the gates open because of the water still flowing into them. Mayor said that may last for 2 weeks. Congrats on the new grandkid, David! SNL keep us posted about Larry and Martha. Let us know if we can help them.
Place: Richardson Comments: Hooray! Don left his mom 's house in Pasadena at 9 this morning. Hope it doesn't take much longer than the usual 4 and a half hours or so to get here. He's been there since about noon last Fri. Most of Pasadena still has electricity and her home didn't get any water inside. So fortunate! But I have to give kudos to Kroger, Walmart and HEB for their dedication and brave efforts to get their stores back open to serve their neighborhoods. Kroger in Pasadena opened for a few hours Monday. Additionally, Tuesday the WM opened and Wed the big HEB opened. Great story in today's paper about how Kroger flew people into Houston prior to the hurricane and put them up in a hotel waiting for it to hit. Then trucked them to the store to get it open. You may have elec and food, but it's hard to open a big grocery stores with only 1 or 2 employees! These 3 stores did everything possible to get enough employees to get the stores open and help people. Don said it was kinda eerie at HEB as there was an armed policeman at the entrance and only one door to enter & exit. Same at other stores. They are having isolated cases of looting/thieves. Don went Thursday to HEB to gt his mom some food before he left. Surprise - No milk, bacon or any TV dinners. He said he bought something called "Soy Milk". LOL He didn't know what it was but his mom likes cereal for breakfast & it said "milk". He also got her 2 cans of her favorite biscuits and bananas. They're saying supply trucks will get there either late today or Saturday. But Pasadena is so much better off than the rest of the area. Tiger and I are ready for Don to get home, we missed him!!
Place: Calif. Comments: Hey, congrats David on that new grand-one. Never too many.
Place: Richardson Comments: Congratulations on G-baby #3 Doc!!! Maybe they can name him Charles Sam! Jim, I was wondering the same thing about Jerry Tillery & family. Richmond is still under water & as of this evening news they said they expected the water to rise even further tonight in Richmond. Jack - Have you spoken to Jerry today? I know y'all stay in close contact. Thanks for any news anyone can provide on our classmates in the affected areas.
Place: KC, MO Comments: Birthday Greetings to all who are celebrating today - and congratulations, David, on the birth of your grandson! Our bakery / luncheon today raised $2,851.40 for Houston - not too bad for a hastily thrown-together project. Of course it's just a drop compared to what will be needed - but "every little drop"....I especially like the $1.40 portion. To me that last little bit represents the grassroots nature of the event - donations being made by employees as opposed to a check being cut by corporate. (Of course, the nice, big, round cash and in-kind donations being made by corporate offices throughout the country are greatly appreciated - hope that they keep rolling into Texas and Louisiana for a long time!) Love to all - Carol
