Having been away from you all for so long, I feel fortunate that Odis made the Spring Mini and I got to visit with him one more time. Sometimes, after people pass we “enhance” what they were like. Odis was the real deal: friendly, genuine and and uplifting to be around. I won’t forget the smile...

Place: Update on Odis' Memorial

Comments:
I've posted the pertinent info in the previous post about the Memorial that will be held Wed., 10-24, in DeSoto for Odis.
I met Heidi, Karen's dtr, today and gave her a thumb drive with photos on it that they wouldn't have had access to from our Minis. Thank you Donnie F. & Don L. for sending the ones I needed to complete the package.  She said immediately after the Memorial they will have a celebration with light refreshments so everyone can visit and share their stories and good memories of Odis.

I received the info from Karen this morning regarding the services for Odis.  There will not be a family visitation.  Odis' request was to be cremated.

Memorial will be this Wednesday, 10-24-18, at 10:00am at the Faith Bible Church in Desoto, Tx.
1437 W. Pleasant Run Rd.  In lieu of flowers he had requested donations be given to the Wounded Warrior Foundation, Jews for Jesus, Salvation Army or a similar charity.

That's a sad thing to read about Odis.  His photos of his travels, family, etc. certainly indicated a great life he'd built for himself.  He was another one of those classmates (going back to Russell days) who seemed to always be smiling.

As I've told Sandy & others in separate e-mails, I've been working long hrs, but following g/b posts since the day after her 1st one.

I contacted Rick Mitchell, close friend and who joined the Army with Odis, and he went to the hospital right away.  Very glad he was able to spend some time chatting about their past while Odis' son, Jason, listened.

I received e-mails from Odis routinely since our 50th reunion and he wanted to get together again at the 70th b'day party.  I came, but Rick said Odis hadn't due to a shoulder injury.  I e-mailed him afterward, as a reply to a 'funny one about men', to let him know he missed a good party & I hoped we could make-up for it in the future.  Then came the gut-punch.

I've since retrieved that reply & will hang onto it.  I also sent Sandy a couple of photos from '09 when Odis, Rick Mitchell, Barry Hosford & I visited Martha Noah in Arlington to deliver a shadowbox with all of Vic's medals from Vietnam.  Sandy will include those photos with others being provided to Odis' family.

I join all of you 'care bears' in prayer for Odis, now at peace with our Lord, and his family as they mourn his loss, while gathering strength to prepare a celebration of his life.  Once the arrangements are known, I plan be there.

Heidi called me to say it was her dad's wishes not to have a family viewing or services.  Instead he wanted to be cremated and for there to be a memorial with a celebration afterwards.  Tentatively the Memorial will be Sat 10-27.  They will be meeting to make arrangements tomorrow.  I will pass along the info as soon as I receive it.

This is a sad and difficult message to post.  Heidi (Odis step-dtr) notified me Odis passed away last night.  That's all the info I have right now.  As she gives me details of services I will post them here.  Right now my top priority is getting them the photos they have asked for of Odis.
God Bless his wife, Karen, and their whole blended family as they try to get thru this very difficult time.  It's difficult for all of us too.

I join the rest in our group to say how awfully sad the news about Odis is.  Odis is one of those guys about whom it has always been valid to say, "To know him is to love him."  At SOC our friend was always open, smiling, good-natured, and friendly.  At our recent gathering he still showed those positive characteristics.  He and his family are in my prayers.

I've got my never-before-seen photos from our 70th Party posted.  Next, I'm posting Ronney McKee's photos.  Thank You Ronney for sending them!!  When/if others send their photos, I'll post them too.  The hard part is done, creating the photo page on the site!

Be sure to click on the 1st photo and then you can scroll thru all of them easily.  Some of the pics are too big for the little square but will fully open when you click or scroll thru.  Larry Edwards sent a good photo of he & 3 of his best friends!  [thumb]

Don't worry Ronney, I fixed the spelling, you're good. It was a heartfelt sentiment that I'm sure many of us are feeling.

Paul - You are so right!  My heart is breaking and it's made me very sad to think how difficult it must be for Karen and their children and grandchildren.  The only thing I know to do is pray.

I think this is one of the toughest parts of us all aging. We manage to cope with our own frailties and “parts failures,” but it is so difficult to helplessly watch others face such difficulties. Still praying.

Reading this note from Odis' daughter breaks my heart. Cannot help but get watery eyed trying to imagine such a vibrant, positive man like Odis is now so sick. It literally breaks my heart. As was written in the note, he does not have much longer to live. And, that is a positive and negative. The negative is seeing him suffer. The positive is that the suffering won't last long.
Odis was a positive influence for all of us in school. Was wonderful seeing a big guy like Odis who was so kind and gentle to everyone. Just hope Odis realizes that we all love him dearly. Cannot imagine future class get-togethers without him. But, will be praying for his comfort and the comfort of his family. They have so many reasons to be proud of being in Odis' family and the rest of us for being his friend. WE LOVE YOU, ODIS. WE LOVE YOU VERY MUCH! AND WE ALWAYS WILL. You have left a lasting positive impression on each and every one of us. And, we are proud to have you in our list of friends. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, ODIS MY FRIEND!
