Place: LV, TX Comments: Ronney/Larry - Thank you both for the kind words. I hope there aren't any more names to be added to the Vietnam Memorial Wall for SOC classes of the 60's. These were all we had learned of leading up to our 45th reunion in 2011. I have all their class photos, plus Cloyde's from home, but sent them separately to SOC '66 Vets via e-mail. Sandy offered to help post them here separately as a follow-up later, since I don't have a website or FB acct. Larry - Regarding Cloyde, I don't have the article handy, but seem to recall his dad was instrumental in opening the VA D/FW National Cemetery. He then had Cloyde's remains exhumed from Laureland (?) and re-interred at D/FW. Jay 'Smokey' Kimbrough was close to the family and also in 'Nam at the time of Cloyde's death. Smokey rode with the Patriot Guard Riders during the funeral procession to the grave site and provided home & USMC pix.
Place: Dickinson ,Texas Comments: Thank you, Don Lincoln for your post of our SOC heroes. As a member of the 1965 class, I knew all of them quite well. I had known Larry since the first grade. I was not aware Cloyde was killed in Viet Nam until your post. Several years ago, a replica of the Viet Nam Wall came to Galveston. It was a tearful but proud experience. Thank you again for your remembrance of all our veterans.
Place: A;;em. TX Comments: Thank you, Don Lincoln, for posting the SOCites of the 60s who lost their lives in the VN war. Very humbling. Brough tears to my eyes. I did not know some of them. But, each of them are now on my list of heroes. Our class should get together sometime and have a memorial service for these wonderful, brave men (I won't call them boys. They have earned the rank of MEN. REAL MEN!) I know that a service would be a lot of work, especially if their loved ones were invited. But, I like the idea. If not a service, we can all lift up a prayer for each of these men and their families and other loved ones, thanking God for allowing us to know them and thanking them for being willing to put their lives in danger to make a better world for us today. God bless EACH one of them, along with all others who fought in the war, no matter if they did or did not come home. I love each one of you for your service. Now, to go dry my eyes. Ronney McKee

Place: Richardson Comments: Wow Sammy! Our roots do both go back to Germany! Because not everyone came in at NY but rather in Galveston that's why we have so much of the Germany history down there in Crawford, McGregor, Valley Mills, Mohshein and all that surrounding area, even in Waco & West. We have a lot of Gauers in West. Very interesting Sammy, our G-Parents or Great G-Parents may have known one another. Heck, we may be long lost cousins numerous times removed!!
Place: Richardson Comments: Thanks to ALL the men & women in our class who served in the military. I am very proud of you and appreciative for what you did. I was going to try & name all the ones from our little closeknit group, but soon realized we have way too many for me to remember everyone. So "Thank YOU" to each and everyone of you and to my husband as well. Happy Memorial Day!
Place: Planoopop Comments: Interesting Sandy. My grandfather's last name was Henegar. We traced his roots back to Germany and his escape to Prussia then Galveston. His father was Johann Henneke from Nuremberg, Germany. Grandpa Heneger moved to Kentucky in 1903 to Tennessee and settled in Mcgregor. .
Place: Richardsom Comments: Sammy - It's my mom 's side of the family. My G-pa's name was Gauer. My G-ma's maiden was Schultz. Yes they were German. Born in Germany but my G-pa's family left Germany when G-pa was very small and went to Austria. They escaped Austria to the USA on a ship when he was 10 or 11, he couldn't remember exactly. They arrived in Galveston, TX. My G-ma was a few years younger than G-pa and they also escaped and arrived on a ship in Galveston. That's why there is such a German presence in and around those small towns, they didn't arrive in NY. I'm not sure how "Smith" might fit in but you never know. my mom was 100% German so my bro & I are 50%. Growing up my mom said her parents started learning English as best they could but her G-ma, who lived with them, only spoke German. My mom used to be able to speak it fluently but as years passed and my great G-ma died, all the aunts & uncles quit speaking it. But here's a tidbit. Wilbur Willhite's mom was also 100% German. She & my mom became friends at PTA and they used to talk German a lot for the fun of it. Anyway, I don't speak nuttin' but English and sometimes that's debatable.
Place: Plano Comments: As I recall Sandy, we have something in common. My relatives lived in McGregor, Waco, Valley Mills and Moody. Many family reunions were spent at Mother Neff Park and Cameron Park. We need to compare family history notes. Who knows, we may be distant cousins
Place: Edmond Comments: Safe travels and a good time
Place: Richardson Comments: So true Paul. If we made a grocery list of all our problems . . . well, don't get me started as you'd need 2 pages. LOL But in the whole scheme of things, we're all hangin' in there and doing what we can to get better. I will be thinking of you all day today & tomorrow as I know you're going thru strong rounds of chemo. God speed you to a full recovery this time around. Not this Sunday, but the next, we'll be heading south to the little town of Moshein, TX to have a Gauer family reunion in the small community center next to the tiny Baptist church. We drive to Waco, then thru Valley Mills and take a small FM road that goes thru Moshein. Blink & you'll miss it! If you're wondering why on earth we'd go there for a reunion . . . All my Mom's relatives live in Crawford, Waco, Valley Mills or McGregor. She was born & raised in Crawford.
Place: Edmond Comments: We are quite “the bunch” aren’t we? I am beginning to think that from head to toe we can find someone in our class with something in that area. Nonetheless, we are all still hanging in there, hopefully with our senses of humor intact, and with the knowledge that now and forever we be SOCites. 🐻. Does anyone remember the gal who, during morning announcements, would tell us to “trottle on down” to the office to do this or that?
Place: Richardson Comments: My gosh, what else can happen! I'm so glad to see that y'all are OK, minus a collision with a flying board. I do use the NBC5 active Radar to see where the storms are when there's warnings of bad weather. I couldn't read or type on GB yesterday as it was my monthly visit to the Retina Specialist. Last May I found out I had something called BRVO in my right eye. Branch Retina Vein Occlusion, that's a mouth full. My eye sight started getting bad last year but only in R eye. Went to eye Dr who immediately referred me to the specialist as I have edema (swelling) in R. eye, that's why vision was bad. Long story short, I have been to the specialist for 1 yr now and each month get an injection in my eye to try & reduce swelling by reducing the fluid build up. The main branch vein is leaking and fluid builds up. After lots of research and discussions with Dr I get these injections to keep from loosing the sight in my eye. It's finally getting better but still not completely clear. I block off the Dr visit day each month because I can't see out of that eye until about bedtime or fully by in the morning. I'm just thankful that in this day & age it can be helped as years ago there wouldn't have been anything they could do & I would have lost sight in that eye. They have some really high-tech fancy machine there that take digital pictures of your entire eye & I get to see what my retina looks like and how it is or isn't improving. Enough about my eye, today's another day & I can see
Place: Edmond Comments: Thanks, Sandy. We are fine. We did have a surprise microburst that blew a board off of our patio wall and hit Kathy. But she is fine. Thanks for hanging in there with us.
Place: Richardson Comments: Paul I kept watching the radar last night & saw what was happening . . . are y'all OK? |
