Comments: Toni, do you remember how Levine's would give you a baby chicken with the purchase of a pair of shoes around Easter? My dog ate every one of those little chicks. Perhaps they should have given away free baby snakes at Halloween!! haha!!
Comments: Sandra, I'll go with you on a Friday. Sign me up. Maybe we could still find a good place to eat over there. Should be some good bar-b-que. I haven't been by my house in over 20 years. It made me too sad. I lived there the first 17 years of my life and I hope it still looks ok.
Comments: A couple of years ago I rode the Dart Light Rail from Illinois and Westmoreland to Plano, where it ends. Take a ride on the rail and you'll go down memory lane AND see places you've never seen before in Oak Cliff. It was a fun ride; I thought that I'd read my book on the trip, but spent the time looking out the window. It was on a Friday morning and I didn't feel threatened at all. My daughter and I went shopping in old downtown Plano. When I got back on the rail, it was later in the afternoon and around time for folks to get off work. In fact, there were no seats for some, so they stood. It was nice not to have to worry about the traffic on 75. At Skillerns, I sat at the counter and ate my banana split. Huba, huba, Sandy McGee. I remember those Friday nites. So, it was you back there.
Comments: Where's Gary Dagley when we need him...he remembers everything!
Comments: Richard....my old house on Sutter is occupied by hispanics as well! Lots of cars and trucks in the driveway and on the street too. Sandy McM, I'll go with you! We should get a group of us....always heard there's safety in numbers! We'll go cruisin'....
Comments: Linda P, I drove past the Crest Center on my last Dallas trip...Dart line goes right in front of it. It's interesting to note some level of urban renewal in that area. There seems to be a growing Hispanic influence around there and the colors and decorations visible on and around the housing are quite nice. I'm not sure I'd walk there at night, however, as we all used to...in fact, I'm not sure where I'd walk at night and feel completely secure.
Comments: Crest Theatre, Friday night, back rows. Hubba, Hubba, Hubba! Great times, who cared what was showing on the screen?
Comments: I don't think anyone mentioned Ben Franklin Variety Store. It was either jacks, a magic slate, or the magnets.
Comments: Toni, I remember the name Alice Coleman, but can't place her. She was older than us wasn't she? I think she was Sue Zan's age. The Polar Bear across from Lake Cliff . I was so sad when they finally closed it. Did anyone ever drive to Beckley passed Methodist Hospital for hot donuts at Lone Star Donuts?I want to take half a date and drive to all these places, anyone want to go?
Comments: ....hey what about the free milk shake or malt from Skillerns with your purchase of your school supplies?? My brother used to get hand-packed ice cream from Skillerns soda fountain. He would eat one or two pints at a time. My mother warned him that he shouldn't do that....his reply....why, they don't weigh much!
Comments: I remember the Morris store having the pulley originally....I think Levines moved in after Morris moved out. I do remember the xray machine at both stores and the store I can't remember the name of as they sold Buster Brown shoes! They also had a location in later years right around the corner from me in Garland. Can anyone remember the name of that store in Cedar Crest? I remember my mother letting me ride to Charlie's BBQ with our yard man to get lunch for all of us. If we saw that picture today, we'd call Child Protective Services!! HOORAY!!! I just remembered the name of that store.....The Young Texan!!! Man oh man....the lights are still on and someone's home!!!!
Comments: Ada, that was the Morris Store. I was fascinated by the pulley's. I closed my thumb in the car door once when I was little trying to get in the store. Linda, Skillerns was my favorite place to go for banana splits. The one at Kiest Lancaster and Wynnwood. The Darnell's were kin to the movie star, Linda Darnell and both Susanne and her mother look like her.
Comments: I lived on Bowling Green and we would walk to the Crest Theater on Saturdays for the matinee. After the movie was over I would go to Skillerns for a banana split, then walk home. Glen Grounds and Darrell Grounds lived next door to me and we would walk to the Crest Shopping Center. A couple of years ago, I came home from downtown Dallas and ended up in front of the old shopping center. From what I remember the Dart Light Rail runs right in front of it. I remember Levines and the machine that you put your feet in to see what size shoe you wore. I guess it was an x-ray machine. It was fun to see my feet in that green light. Anyone remember that machine?
Comments: was that the store which had the machine that could xray our feet? Was that Levines? They had the little pully with the capsule to send messages and money up to the office.
Comments: Ada...what about the store near the movie theatre where they sold really cool clothes for kids and Buster Brown shoes? What was the name of that store??? My mother shopped there for me a lot. It was there for years, and the man that ran it ended up at the Dad & Lad stores....ok....reboot again! |
