Comments: ....hey what about the free milk shake or malt from Skillerns with your purchase of your school supplies?? My brother used to get hand-packed ice cream from Skillerns soda fountain. He would eat one or two pints at a time. My mother warned him that he shouldn't do that....his reply....why, they don't weigh much!
Comments: I remember the Morris store having the pulley originally....I think Levines moved in after Morris moved out. I do remember the xray machine at both stores and the store I can't remember the name of as they sold Buster Brown shoes! They also had a location in later years right around the corner from me in Garland. Can anyone remember the name of that store in Cedar Crest? I remember my mother letting me ride to Charlie's BBQ with our yard man to get lunch for all of us. If we saw that picture today, we'd call Child Protective Services!! HOORAY!!! I just remembered the name of that store.....The Young Texan!!! Man oh man....the lights are still on and someone's home!!!!
Comments: Ada, that was the Morris Store. I was fascinated by the pulley's. I closed my thumb in the car door once when I was little trying to get in the store. Linda, Skillerns was my favorite place to go for banana splits. The one at Kiest Lancaster and Wynnwood. The Darnell's were kin to the movie star, Linda Darnell and both Susanne and her mother look like her.
Comments: I lived on Bowling Green and we would walk to the Crest Theater on Saturdays for the matinee. After the movie was over I would go to Skillerns for a banana split, then walk home. Glen Grounds and Darrell Grounds lived next door to me and we would walk to the Crest Shopping Center. A couple of years ago, I came home from downtown Dallas and ended up in front of the old shopping center. From what I remember the Dart Light Rail runs right in front of it. I remember Levines and the machine that you put your feet in to see what size shoe you wore. I guess it was an x-ray machine. It was fun to see my feet in that green light. Anyone remember that machine?
Comments: was that the store which had the machine that could xray our feet? Was that Levines? They had the little pully with the capsule to send messages and money up to the office.
Comments: Ada...what about the store near the movie theatre where they sold really cool clothes for kids and Buster Brown shoes? What was the name of that store??? My mother shopped there for me a lot. It was there for years, and the man that ran it ended up at the Dad & Lad stores....ok....reboot again!
Comments: I remember, Toni, and Levines and the Western Auto store by the Crest Theater. There was also a Griffs at Lancaster and Kiest. The bowling alley at the LK shopping center. I know we've gone over all of these places, but I like to refresh my memory....or is that reboot?
Comments: James Young.....of course, we've gone over this material before but when we have new additions to the GB, we all enjoying catching them up! I love strolling down memory lane over and over again. Sandy McM, I remember the name Rucker....seems like I was in the Brownies and Girl Scouts with someone with that last name....oh wait, that was the Roper twins! Okay, JY, I'm repeating myself too but when Jada mentioned the Vaughns, it brought back memories of me babysitting for them....for Stevie Ray! My brother-in-law, Roger, went to school with him at Kimball. Ladies, I lived on the other end of Sutter closer to the shopping center. I lived across the street from the Shinns-Linda- and the Colemans-Alice! Do any of you remember them? Do you remember the 7-11 with the garage door pull down front door....the first Pizza Inn on Lancaster Rd.....Margo's where they served bottled Coke while you shopped....Polar Bear Ice Cream....the original Golden Arches north of Cedar Crest Shopping Center...and what about Skillerns....Wyatt Food Stores....Wyatt's Cafeteria....the Morris Store? I think I just about covered the shopping center, well except for the A&P and the notorious Crest Theatre! ![]() ![]() Were the Darnells related to the Donni Darnell who was Mark Wilson's wife - the Dallas magician??
Comments: SAndy, Do you know Roger Creager and Aaron Watson? They both have some really funny songs --as does Kevin Fowler who will be in Dallas-- he has one called "beer bait and ammo". Roger Creager has one called LOVE-- then says "Love, is not what this song's about" Anyway-- some great Texas musicians. Actually listened to Aaron Watson on my mp3 player walking to work today. And, Robert Earl Keen has been coming to NYC ,as does Jerry Jeff--we have seen both a few times but Jerry Jeff is a little ornery. The crowd was filled with old drunk Texan New York men-- the worst of both worlds in this case -- loud, drunk and pushy -- and Jerry Jeff, rather than just ignore them got mad at them. REK just goes with the flow. But he is SOOO loud I don't think I can go back again. Last time I got physically ill from the noise.--well, maybe we should just go in the back next time instead of standing by the speakers!!!
Comments: Memo to John Southworth: Since you seem to be too lazy to dig out your "old" computer and too cheep to have the geek squad come fix it so you could up date your popular and always interesting site, how about an update on PFC Matt? We like to keep track of our servicemen and women. If it is not prying, how is your daughter doing??
Comments: Who knew... Sally is a C&W music fan! I was brought up on C&W, good stuff!
Comments: Sally, no new young singers...give me Willie Nelson or George Strait any day. Buddy, there was a picture that always hung in Dr. Hamby's office of a dentist examining a little boy dressed in a cowboy suite. My husband is a dentist and I always looked for that pic. for him. Many years ago, the Hambys had a yard sale and my Mother went to it....there was the picture, she bought it and it has always hung in Joe's office.
Comments: And Dr. Chester was my sunday school teacher ( I think?). He believed in evolution-- Presbyterian--remember it as part of a lesson on Genesis. BTW, I am jealous of all Dallasites. THis weekend many of Texas' best known (young) country western singers are at the so-called Mardi Gras celebration somewhere in Fair Park-- so jealous. Roger Creager and Aaron Watson etc
Comments: Chester Clinic, Lancaster-Kiest Shopping Center and Herman's Hardware. Wasn't Karen Dollar married to Butch Arnold when we were Soph's ????? I'm almost positive we have covered this before.
Comments: Ada Ann Dr Hamby was our family dentist. Judy Hamby was a good friend at Tech. Always a big Holmes man. I think his son was the basketball coach at Holmes. Chester Clinic O MY |
