Today, I set out to give away $5,000 of the State's money held as Unclaimed Property or Abandoned Accounts. Surprisingly, it was harder to do than I would have thought. I have tracked down a bunch of folks via the internet who were missing and am on a personal quest to reunite them with their own windfalls. All of them lived in The Woodlands at one time.

3:20pm ... This afternoon I attempted to meet with Mrs. Huguette Slattery and inform her of the good news that she had $1,000 awaiting her in Austin from some kind of screwup with Stewart Title Co. back in 1992. Instead, at her front door I was given the bum rush by her stupid son who would not allow me to speak with her. I left a phone no. for her to call next week, but in light of the rude treatment, I have now decided to let the money rot in the cofers of the State.

4:08pm ... The next person I called on was a black computer programer named Mark Seals, age 48, who shares a home with 7 people under one roof and he is the only one working. He was VERY happy to learn that there is $1,107.29 awaiting him from an old home insurance claim in 2005.

6:40pm ... Then I met with Mrs. Mary Saltzer, a striking 60 yr. old, who lives in a home appraised at $488,000 near Lake Woodlands. She was the most excited of all to learn that 6 items totaling $2,541.51 have been held by the State since 2002. I told her the money wouldn't be enough to change her lifestyle, but she said "it'll be enough for a nice trip somewhere ... or a run to the mall". I agreed. Hey, it beats the tax stimulus check.

Today I felt like John Beresford Tipton (from the 1950s TV show The Millionaire). Or, actually, I would be playing the equivalent role of his butler, Mr. Michael Anthony, who had to make physical delivery of the cashier's checks to the millionaires-to-be. It was a mixed bag, but ended on a high note.

Closing in on my goal of $5,000. Today's tally is up to $3,648.80 (not counting the idot household of Huguette). By state law, I am allowed to charge a fee of up to 10% for my troubles. This was all pro bono.

That kind of food is not served in NH, so I hope that I can try some 678.  It does look interesting....like something that would be caught in Five Mile Creek.

John,
Glad you and Dru enjoyed Yuvonnes' Poisson de Mackingcheese. Hey, for once Karen is telling the truth. If you could catch a few Squeels you could always go home with a mess of  Possadillos. We called that dish "Possum on the Half Shell" at our house.

Say JS, did you actually eat any of that "Squeel"? We never ate the stuff, we just caught it for bait to bag bigger prey. Possadillos (another local hybrid of possum and armadillo) just can't get enough squeel. To catch them, we would conk a squeel with a rock and then lay it in the road. The possadillos would run out to get the squeel after dark and if a car came they would "play possadillo" to make you think they're dead. Sure enough, seconds later, they would be dead when the cars hit them. Now that's good eatin'. Wouldn't eat the squeel, though, but it makes a nice garnish.

Gosh John - did you actually eat those things?    Seems to me that I saw some of those over on Okinawa when we were stationed over there - we just could not decide if we should eat them or train them!

I think Carol probably talked our hunky bellman into coming and visiting her instead of staying at the hotel and now she has us all fooled!!!!!  We will definitely miss you Carol.

JS, you have to take Smiley's stories of accomplishment with a grain of salt (or perhaps a cow's saltlick would be more appropriate). However, I will say those varmits you were served at his home look like the hybrids we use to catch in the creek behind Clara Oliver. They were a cross between a squid and an eel...we called 'em "squeels". It would break your heart to hear the way they carried on, squealing and such, when we would club them with creek rocks to subdue them. But Smiley can fill you in the next time you are over to dinner.

Carol, we all are disappointed that you won't be able to make it this time, but hopefully it won't be too long before the next one. Chime in more often on the GB.

Many thanks to the Smileys for inviting us over to enjoy some of the bounty from Dale's recent fishing trip at South Padre. We'd been looking forward to a seafood platter spiced up with Yuvonne's secret family receipe.

However, upon arrival, I began to doubt the proclaimed success of Dale's fishing venture. I snapped this with my cell phone camera while Yuvonne was looking for the ketchup:

Hi, everyone!

I did what I said I would NOT do - I got behind on the GB again.  I was behind by just 5 weeks' worth of posts this time, though, so catching up didn't take too long.  Some of the posts made me LOL, while some made me cry - but they all made me miss all of you so very much.

...and, speaking of missing you - I unfortunately will miss seeing everyone in June.  (Sandy, I'm going to copy and paste from the note that I sent to you on Thursday.)
Our summer national meeting, which usually takes place at the end of June, starts on May 31st this year. I am one of those responsible for seeing that changes approved at our national meetings are incorporated into various specification components that we produce, and the time in which to incorporate those changes is pretty short. I have known about this since the June gathering was announced - and normally it wouldn't be a problem - but one of our team members had to have major surgery and won't be back until about the time that I should be leaving for Dallas. (I am her backup and will need to be available in case she is not able to get "up to speed" as quickly as she is hoping.)  I just can't risk being away from the office and maybe missing a deadline.

So - please, please, please, please, please - let's have a second get-together this year - please, please, please, please, please!!!!!  If we do - please, please, please, please, please!!!!! - I plan to make it abundantly clear to my fellow team members that they are NOT to "mess things up" for me again!

Besides work and an occasional family get-together, not much going on with me.  My most exciting news is that my nephew William graduated from USC yesterday - which doesn't seem possible, as I recall going to his high school graduation about 3 days ago!  He plans to work at least a year before going to grad school.  Sure wish that he would come back to this area to live, but we can't seem to convince him that Kansas and Missouri are the best places to begin a career in filmmaking.  (Dennis Bishop - Are you out there?!?)

Talk with you again next week.  I love you all!

While you are close to getting that sleek racing yacht form again,
I'm afraid the best I can HOPE for is moving from Super Tanker down to freighter. Do hope to lose the barnacles though!!

I am aware of that Ronney.  I can also remember that Jack's nephew has a lot more "muscle" then I can ever remember Jack having   Sorry Jack  You know I love you anyway!!!!!

Went out to dinner with Toni and Bruce last night.  We had to give Bruce a hard time because his BD is coming up on Tuesday.  Offered to get him a wheelchair so his can get around better!  You know me - I was really nice to him though!

Don't believe Hawkins. If any other guy had caught on to your statement, they would have been bombarding you with all sorts of abuse.

Good pictures of the SOC Bear on Rick's trip. But, where is the photo of Rick sleeping with his "teddy" bear? And, that last picture...well Rick must have forgotten to give him his antidepressant that day. Looks like he is going to end it all by jumping off the roof.   Glad you thought of us and had fun, Rick.
