Comments: Here is a link to the SOC Christmas Party thrown in Dec. 2005. It is held at Peaches Sweezy Walker's home and about 6 or 7 classmates from various classes co-host the event. She knocks herself out decorating the place: http://lynell.smugmug.com/gallery/1844552#92433852_TaFgb
Comments: Thanks for reminding me John, I've been so busy I forgot about the Christmas party at Peaches house! Look forward to seeing you & Dru!
Comments: Rick, from your experience, how does the Belmont Hotel measure up against the Cherry Pit? Toni, here is a link to the aforementioned All-SOC Christmas Party in northeast Dallas: http://www.soc63.com/events.html Sandy Lynn is usually a "regular" and I've encountered Jack and Rick there some years. Good food, good people. I'll see if I can find any pics from last year.
Comments: Ada, he was 75 which means he was in his 30s when he was teaching us! Can you believe that?! It's amazing how much older adults looked when we were kids!
Comments: Happy Birthday Everett and Tommy!!! Toni: Peaches invites all the cool kids to her house every year for a pre-Christmas party. It seems to be scheduled for the 7th this year. NO! Really it is for all SOCites. Glynda and I went for the 1st time last year. We ended up eating at the tables in the garage. (was that the kids tables??) Southworth made sure his table didn't have any space available for us!! You are suppose to bring a covered dish, so John brought Dru with a hat. We had a great time, eating and visiting with all. Don't know if our schedule will allow us to attend this year or not.
Comments: Susan, Mr. Atherton was at Holmes. I remember that he had a bust of Beethoven on his desk. How old was he?
Comments: Rick, thanks for the play-by-play. That place sounds like a place we might all like to look into for a gathering some day. Sounds like you should contact Gordy Johnson - I bet he could arrange to get a cool vehicle for you! Heck, the GNO group will volunteer to be in the kodak moment with you behind the wheel. We know how to do that don't we girls?? Okay, Southworth - what party and where?
Comments: Do any of you remember a music teacher named John Atherton? I don't remember if we had him at SOC of O.W. Holmes. I think he was at Holmes. Anyway, his obituary is in the Dallas Morning News today.
Comments: Yes Toni, It was fun to eat there. Can you believe that I have never been there as long as I have lived in Dallas. Even as a teenager I drove by that motel and thought what a beautiful place to be in this part of town but never had a reason to drive up the drive way or go into the motel. Now it is a refurbished Hotel. I am attaching the description that I sent to Sandy. I don't want to make you feel bad but you missed a GREAT time at the Cliff Cafe. I introduced myself to people and talked with them and others came over to greet me. No one was shy. I had a chicken sandwich that was one of the best I have ever had. cost $8 . After lunch we toured the Belmont Hotel, went inside the lobby, bar, and out on the patio to see a great view of down town Dallas from the west side. The motel was built in 1947 and renovated recently and changed into a Hotel. We went inside several of the rooms. Some of the rooms ware combined to make suites, so they had two rest-rooms or in some cases a sauna was built instead of the second rest-room. The small old one car garage for each room was turned into a screened in patio with a table and chairs for a breezy afternoon lunch or just to relax at the end of the day. The grounds were beautifully landscaped and the original swimming pool was fixed up but not enlarged so it was small by toady's standards and the grassy area near the pool had a stage built for small concerts for the guests. Do you remember the old metal patio chairs from the '50s? well two of those chairs sat outside of each room for cool evening chats with other hotel guests or just watching the sun set. What a great place. The suites rent for about $400 / night , singles are less. They say a lot of celebrities know about Belmont Hotel and stay there when in town. If I had a model A, I would love to take a picture of it there, it would look at home in that quaint 1940's architecture.
Comments: Okay, Toni, I have to fess up and admit I was not at the Cliff Cafe event. Rick was there and apparently his cologne is working fine since he is surrounded by women. Here is a link to the recently posted photos: http://lynell.smugmug.com/gallery/6570728_4wwaK/1/418305179_AvKkq#P-1-6 Rick, I hope to see you, Hawkins and others at the annual SOC Christmas Party on Dec. 7th.
Comments: Toni - Three 4-year-olds are a handful for anyone! But it's hard to get mad at them when they look into your eyes and say "I sorry Mimi". They definitely keep us laughing!Don - yesterday's win was especially sweet since it was on the Redskins home turf!!
Comments: Sandy, your grandones are adorable. My grandson, Zeke, who shares the same birthdate, is so full of energy. We watched him completely remodel a local Chuck-E-Cheese at his recent birthday party. Where do they get that energy?
Comments: Cowboys won - HBD to all of us 'lone blue star' fans! While stationed in DC, I had a t-shirt that read: "I root for 2 teams - the Cowboys and any other team who's playing the Redskins!" I was up there when the Cowboys' only win for the entire season was against the Redskins, on their turf at RFK stadium - bittersweet.
Comments: Thanks for the update John S! I spent the entire weekend at yet another fall baseball tournament, and I was really moved at all the support these little guys (9 and 10) and their parents gave my son (their coach). When my son spoke to his team at the conclusion of the tournament, he got all choked up, teared up, and actually cried ....he thinks of these little guys as his own. Needless to say I was very, very proud of him and them! What a weekend, and then the Cowboys were able to come back and win too! I'm buying stock in the Kimberly Clark Corporation first thing tomorrow morning. Happy belated birthday, Everett and Tommy! I hope you got everything you wished for! |
