Jada, back when I was doing a lot of shallow gulf coast fishing, any fish that we kept was immediately "lake cleaned" (gutted and cleaned) and tossed in the ice chest. When we got back to land we finished cleaning the fishes. We found scaling a cold fish was much easier. De heading and tailing wasn't any different.

Sandy, I think that they would be filleted because you wouldn't want to freeze a fish whole.

If the fish are frozen are they filleted?  You guys are really confusing me. The only ice hole I'm acquainted with is Jack old gold one.

R.POO.....my ice hole was not stolen, but it was part of a relocation project.
Mr. Smiley....don't you think that all types of fishing involve alot of preparation?  AND equipment?  I think it just depends on how involved a sportsperson one is.

JAda,  JD,
I'm still confused about this "ice fishing" thing. Sounds like there is a lot of preparation and expense and then you finally catch a mess of ice. What do you do with them. You can't fry them. Without a generator you can't make frozen Margaritas and you probably had ice at home in the freezer anyway.
At least with "Bass  Fishin'" you realize a net profit on minimal expenditures.(or so I've told Yuvonne)

Yes, ice fishing is serious business.  Last year my ice hole was ramsacked and I no longer take part of that aspect of the sport.  But, don't assume that I'm not still an ice fishing supporter because I am!

Jada...the people that live on the lake complain about the generators so they have been banned. Therefore no electrical is available...we tie a rope to our beer and place in the Ice Hole...pull up when we want one. Again...we use a kerosene heater to stay warm. Everything else is cold no matter what.

Jack...our shanty's are safe as there is someone on the lake at all times...fishing...anyone found moving or attempting to steal our shanty is shot on the spot. We do not tolerate thieves or pranksters..Ice Hole Fishing is serious business.

Don, glad Kathy and you are safe....the world is a crazy place.
J.D., Haven't they heard of generators in Wisconsin?  No need for propane lanters....just take the generator out on the ice and put it by the bob house.  The generator will keep the area around the ice hole toasty and warm....even lit up with lights.   You could even take a refrigerator out on the ice and put it by the ice hole.  Keep beer and snacks at a decent temp....and put the fish in the freezer.
Jack, bob house poachers are on the rise....they also should be kicked in the ice hole.

Don we picked up that breaking story at noon abt the guy who purposely crashed his small plane into the 7 story bldg there in Austin, TX.   He had some disagreements with the IRS & they have an ofc in that bldg!!  Pretty scary from what we saw at noon!!  I'm glad you are safe!

Re: Plane Crash in Austin

I'm at work south of the city & Kathy's at home in Lago Vista - both fine & well clear of the crash site.

If you're familiar with the area, it occurred just south of the split between Hwy 183 (aka Research Blvd) & MoPac (Loop 1).

The scary part is the pilot was targeting the IRS, which also has a main processing center just next door to where I work.  But he hit one of their other office bldgs, about half way across town, instead - whew!

Ada Ann...between you and the proclaimed professor I'm losing my hair as I laugh so hard...In the wonderful, beautiful and frozen state of WI we do lots of ICE FISHING. Don't know about the north east Ada but we drive our SUV's and Pickem up trucks right to the front door of our shanty's. We carry a kerosene heater, auger, ice fishing pole's and lot's of liquor or beer.

we also bring a portable radio to listen to conservative talk and packer games when appropriate.

We always come home with so much trout that we have to go looking for families that would be glad to take some so we don't waste them.

First, we never talk about out "ICE HOLES" in Public, We never show our "ICE HOLES" to anyone but our wives or fishing buddy's. If our Pickem up trucks or SUV slip into the water because the ice is not thick enough...we call the sheriff's department and claim our vehicles were stolen last night then wait until spring until the ice melts and the boaters discover them at the bottom of the lake...so our insurance pays for the theft and we then go purchase a new pickem up or SUV. Crime solved for the records and we get new sets of wheels. Works about every four years...just a different car, pickem up or SUV.

But until you can drive your vehicle off onto the lake...you have never been ICE FISHING with anyone's ICE HOLE.

And SNL...if any of the prof's posted notes get more than 3 lines...stop it's a supposed funny story...but then I don't laugh at teacher stories anyway...never found them funny.
