Place: The Passing of Jay "Smokey" Kimbrough

Comments:
It is with great sadness that we must close the chapter on our friend Jay "Smokey" Kimbrough. He passed away late yesterday, Sept 8, 2020.

A little more than 6 years ago, on May 16, 2014, Smokey had a bad motorcycle accident out on a country road called TX 6 just S. of Navasota. Unfortunately, he suffered numerous injuries, including severe brain trauma.  It's been a long and difficult 6 yrs for him and his family.

Although Smokey was a very public figure in politics and was a tireless public servant here in Texas, we all knew him as a war hero.  His family had asked for privacy after the accident.  They also ask for privacy now as they mourn his loss.  His dtr posted a nice picture collage and tribute on FB but I doubt there will be a public viewing or services. However, what ever his dtr provides will be posted here for those not on FB.  There were so many life phases to Smokey,  but we will all remember him as a SOC football & baseball player, track, a Military Veteran and hero, a politician, etc, etc.  But classmates, not only from '66 but other years too, will remember him as SMOKEY.  .  . a friend and fellow SOCite.  RIP Smokey

Carol - Thank you for posting the note about Smokey's passing.  Yes, very sad.  I'll ask Kathy to look for FB info, since I'm not on it.

I felt this might happen, but hoped to have an opportunity to visit him beforehand.  However, couldn't reach the family thru one of his closer friends - I should've tried harder.

Will have to see what sort of services are planned and if they'll be private.

Will re-post via SOC '66 e-mail DL.  Thanks again.

For those not on Facebook - Smokey Kimbrough passed away yesterday. So very sad. He was a good man who willingly served our. country and Texas throughout his life.
Rest well, dear Smokey. 💕🇺🇸💕

Dana R., I KNEW IT.  But, you never backed off.  I said something disparaging about that band's music, and you just looked over at me and said "that's my brother".  We kind of went back and forth a bit, but as I said you never backed off.  Now I can sleep at night.

Hi Richard,
I had a younger brother, but he played football at Kimball  If I told you he was in a band, I must have been on something very strong  But that is one thing I never did  Now I might have been running around Kiest park  Lord,  I can't remember what happened yesterday  But, you know,  it is so nice to touch base with you again

Well, Dana Rich, what a kick to see you posting here.  Last time I saw you was summer of 1967 at Kiest Park.  Your younger brother was playing in a rock band there...at least you said it was your brother (I wasn't sure if you were serious about that part or just kiddin' around).  They played a song I hadn't heard before.  I learned it and we included it in our list of songs in the band I was in at the time.

At any rate, good to read your posts and I trust you're doing well.

Mario - That cake thing ... kinda tiny and not much flavor, but nice try.  Maybe try again, once we get together! [cool]

Paul, About the only sport that I will watch and get excited about is horse racing  Today, my son had the winner of the Kentucky Derby Yeah!!  You know a horse doesn't know about all this crap in our world and doesn't have a  word to say.  I don't think they burn anything down  But, a horse is a beautiful animal!!

I am watching SMU v Texas St.  Without the normal atmosphere it just doesn’t seem like a real game.  I understand the reasons but it really hits home how out of normal things are.  Let’s get past this!

Thanks Mario.  Yes, I did love to play baseball & also flag football with you guys. There was only one girl on my street (next door) and she was so sweet & nice but didn't ride a bike and only wanted to play dolls or Jacks.  We also played at John Prasifka's house there on the corner of Kildare & Kingsley.  They had the  nice brick home sitting on 3 lots, so they had lots of room to play.

Yes, those were the care-free days and we all walked around the neighborhood or rode our bikes without worry someone would snatch us up! After supper we were allowed to go back out and could stay until dark.   Hope you & Barbara celebrated your B-day & enjoyed it!

Thank you, Sandy. Yes those were the days, weren't they? Playing baseball on that vacant down the street at the corner off Ledbetter Road from where you lived, and another block down Kildare from where I lived. I actually remember seeing you there, because not many girls could throw and hit the ball like you could...you impressed a lot of us guys, me for sure!! ⚾️

Happy B-day Mario my ol' Kildare friend!  I realize it was 9-1, but still wanted to chime in since I've seen you here a few times lately.  Hope y'all celebrated and you enjoyed your day!  Can hardly wait until we can all see each other again!
