John, I remember that day very well, What I saw in that bucket was amazing. The most notable was a 22 cal. Saturday night special
with the barrel cut totally off. To think, I was on the bus with that guy. And who carries brass Knuckles any more, I thought. Luckily I left my pocket knife at home.

Ms. McMakin, on occasion I do tell the truth and the entire post about my time at Fort Ord is true - even the corny story about the name.

I haven't thought about that place in years. Upon arrival, we were lined up in a formation of four ranks. The drill sgt. in charge asked if any of us had any weapons on us ... knives, guns, brass knuckles etc. Of course no one stepped forward to answer "Yes".

Then he said, "I'm going to send Sgt. Roy down each row. He is carrying a metal wastebasket in which you are to dispose of any weapons on your person. You will be searched afterwards and if any weapons are found on you, it will go VERY hard against you".

As the wastebasket made its way through the group you could hear clunks, thuds, and clanging sounds as Sgt. Roy stepped in front of each young man. I began to wonder what kind of folks I was going to be keeping company with?

And when the wastebasket was presented to me along with Sgt. Roy's hard stare, my hand made its way to my pocket and the prized knife my uncle gave me years ago, made its own clunky sound as it joined the other contraband collected that day.

Well I can definitely see why the Native American do not like us  - especially if they have ever taken a look at that video .  I do not think I will ever be able to hear that song again without thinking about that video!  Thanks Richard!

Well, you've heard the saying, "I don't remember the 70's"....that's the reason.  I probably should have made pre-apologies to any of our native American school mates before posting that one.

MY EYES! OH,OH, MY EYES!
Richard, I'm never gonna forgive you for that one.
I never want to see another "white man's overbite dance" ever again! Sheesh. I bet David M's gonna kick your tail the next time he sees you. I might even help him do it.

Ok folks, I came across a very old and lost video of the "Mystics" as they transitioned into the 70's. You must see this thru the end.  See if you can spot David Mitchell.

Happy Birthday Ada!  Hope you have had a wonderful day!
Yvonne and Dale I just saw the picture of your grandson.  He is so handsome,  he is just darling.  He's already charming the ladies, I see.
Jack it's been a long day, but you just made mine.  I passed with flying colors. They told me to take it to my physician.
John, I don't believe a word you write.  If you were in the 49th I knew someone from TX that was too.  I just can't think of his name right now.

Memo To Sandy McM:

Yesterday you inquired about those who may have trained at Ft. Ord, California. I was there as a lowly PFC in 1967, completing my Basic Training before returning to the 49th Armored Division.

I arrived in late March expecting balmy weather, sunny skies, surf boards and beaches. I was wearing a short sleeved shirt. To my shock, the weather was cold and drizzly. Even in July, the water near the base was too cold to swim in.

In 1994 the place was closed as a military base and converted to civilian use. As Army bases go, it was one of the prettiest ones. Our drill Sergeant told us that the sign at the entrance originally read:

UNFORTUNATE

ORDEAL

and that by 1967 all that was left of the sign was:

FORT

ORD

I had no reason to doubt him. Did you ever visit the Fort?

Ronney -- thanks for the comments.  I'll miss seeing everyone at the mini.  Glad we have some good picture-takers as I'll be able to see everyone by photos taken.

I've never seen The Promise, and that's why we signed up to go.  Everyone I know that has seen it, says the play is wonderful.  I hopt that it's not too cold as I'll be thinking about my cold feet.

I went to Eureka Springs as a kid with my parents and I remember it being a pretty part of Arkansas.  I'll remember your recommendation about The Passion.

My middle daughter fosters dogs from Collin County and told me about a senior lab that was going to be put-to-sleep tomorrow if it didn't either get adopted or fostered.  Well, she's going to go get him for me tomorrow, and bring him to Duncanville Friday.  Now, I'll have 3 dogs.  I don't know what's happening to me.  I don't want her to tell me any more sad stories about animals that need a home. I guess that I'll have to get a bigger pooper scooper and practice doing left-handed pooper picker uppers. Toni help.

Hello....I'm here ....came out of lurking to thank all of you for the birthday wishes.....I've joined most of you in the 60 club.....there are still a few laggers.  I wish I could join all of you this weekend, but our fall Dallas trip didn't coincide....we will be there the 5th-8th.  For all of the events I've missed, I apologize....I haven't been on "friend duty", but I will do better.  I love all of you!
