Comments: Shovel Dog, I hate to tell you this, but I doubt those girls know who or what Austin's was. It has been torn down for a while now. I think it is a parking lot for a CVS now. Mark Housewright was the last editor/publisher of the Oak Cliff Tribune. He's a local boy, I don't remember what school he went to. He and I were on the same ball team back in the 80's and I couched the team his wife was on. My remodeling company installed a picket fence around his back yard in Winnetka. About 6 inches of dirt and then white rock. That job almost broke my back and lost money. Mark tired hard to keep the Tribune afloat but didn't make it.
Comments: Good morning, Sandra! Dan and I shared the same cell for nearly 18 months back around 1966. All he could talk about was "when I get out of here I'm gonna marry Susan Gayle". From what I could piece together, she was a little "bap-a-tist" girl. Did that ever come to pass?
Comments: John S. Yes, I am kin to Dan T. Shellito, he is my brother and is still a good guy, enjoying the heck out of his retirement. He has 300 acres outside of Paris Texas and way too many toys, if that is possible for a guy Two buffalo, and one on the way, which is petrified of (and rightfully so). He is busier now than when he was working. How did you know Dan? Dan went with me to the 35th class reunion. Sandy
Comments: Richard, the SOC cheerleaders are participating in a competition designed by SONY and MTV to promote a new movie titled Fired Up ... hence, the "FU" sign in the background. Each squad had to come up with a one minute cheer incorporating the phrase "Fired Up" in it. I don't know how they fared in the contest? Regarding Ray Zauber of The Oak Cliff Tribune, I recently came across a photo of him and the owner of Austin's BBQ (who, surprisingly, is named "Austin"). You'll find it in the middle of the page in the following link: http://oakcliff.com/ I'll bet the cheerleaders would have won with this cheer: We got your B, We got your B, We got your B-B-B We got your Q, We got your Q, We got your Q-Q-Q The Bears are Fired Up about Austin's ... Whatsa matta wit You?! [repeat for 60 seconds]
Comments: Southworth, that's an interesting picture with some nice looking young ladies. But, what does the "FU" in the background stand for...any idea? Regarding the OC Tribune, my mother worked there for a number of years as well as a number of SOCies; Pat Burrows (class of 63-64 I think..brother was Mike), a few others. Ray Zauber, the editor, was a good guy...used to hire my band for company gatherings.
Comments: I just learned today that The Oak Cliff Tribune closed its doors in February of this year after publishing for over 100 years. Could it be there is a news drought south of the Trinity? I did run across an interesting pic taken Jan. 31, 2009 of the current crop of SOC cheerleaders in a local competition. Snappy outfits, but where are the guys? Time marches on ... unyielding ... unforgiving ... ever-changing ... http://people.consolidated.net/swsw/soc_cheerleaders09.jpg
Comments: I tried that, Dale. While the benefits were fantastic, the pay was not enough to live on. I should have stayed long enough to loose some weight, but the cheap beer kinda defeated the purpose. I was afraid I would get to weak to do my job, so i quit before they fired me.
Comments: Jack, I thought you accepted that "horse ride assistant" job in Jamaica?
Comments: Using standard California logic, they will HAVE to let him off. After all he was predisposed. However his parents can (and will) be sued. If they had not given him the name, he would have NEVER committed the deed. I'm watching the news closely. The Swiss are forcing a vote to require an increase in the minimum vacation time given. Seems with the added stress the current 4 weeks is not enough. they are going for a required 6 weeks vacation per year. Now if I can just get a job there. Anybody know of any openings there??
Comments: Only in LA can you find a headline like this one:
